I have a small 16' V hull that I've been trailering for a few years now, it came with a SeaLion roll on trailer. Both boat and trailer have been around for quite a few years they were not new when I got them but both are in very good shape. My question is, by law does the trailer need to be inspected like a car does (should it have a sticker)? Also 'by law' does the trailer need to have insurance like a car does? I'm pretty sure the boat does not have to have insurance on it, thats a matter of choice. what say you?

Inspection

I think only if the trailer has a brake system do you need the inspection. Just make sure that all your lights work, tires are good and proper experation tag and you should be fine.

I would ask you ins. co. about trailering a boat. As far as insurance my boat and trailer are both insured.

The liability insurance is carried over from the car pulling the trailer. Inspection requirements are based on size and weight, most light trailers do not need a safety inspection, but must conform with safety laws ( lights, reflectors, etc ).

I believe..........

if the Registration weight is under 999 LBS or less, and does not have brakes, it isn't a Titled Vehicle.

I might be wrong, but I don't think it needs an Inspection if it is 999 LBS. or less too.

I tried looking through the NYS DMV search area, but could not come up with an answer on the Question.

Ask at a Inspection Station or your local DMV Office.

If you wanted to have a Safe mind of feeling about it, get it Inspected, it is only a few $$$$.

Good luck.

Trailer Inspection

I have an 18ft. boat and Shorelander trailer. I suggest that you register your boat trailer if you are a NYS resident, and will use it on NYS roads.
I have always experienced a SCPD marine officer check trailer registration and inspection at the Port Jeff boat ramp each season beginning in April.

Grady 180 ,
You are sooooooo right. Register it, but NYS Inspection not required on light trailers. I had the honor of getting a ticket for an expired plate on my trailer from the SCPD Delta boat at the ramp in Mt.Sinai. I'll bet not many people have highway tickets from the Marine Police Boat ! Must have been a very slow day for on the water crime !

When I bought my trailer in NYS two years ago it came with an inspection sticker. My impression is that by law it needs to be inspected annually. Local custom seems to be to ignore that particular regulation. I only use my trailer to launch once at the beginning of the season and once to retrieve from the marina that is one half mile away and have never had it inspected.

kastoria, I saw that on my registration form as well which is why I posted this question, however I was able to register my trailer without this info. I do not have brakes on my trailer, it's weight load apparently does not require it to be inspected. Thanks for your responces, as always much appreciated. Flounder are biting!!
