I went out on Rip Tide III last week. Lots of blacks but couldn't get the knack of setting the hook. 4th time blackfishing 1st this year. Using the party boat rig with spider wire. Any advice for a black fish rookie? Thanks.

Welcome Tog Rookie,
You came to the right place!
We are fortunate to have alot of really experianced and informed people on this board. And the cool thing is that they don't mind sharing the knowledge with you.
When you get some time, go through the past threads and do some copy and pasting. I'm in the same boat. I'm sure that in no time you will be pulling in those bulldogs with the best of them!

when you feel a couple of hits slowly raise the rod and if you feel the hits continue set the hook hard. try that that may work.
also like i have recently learned from this site, experiement with different pieces of bait, with or without the legs, and proper hook placement is very important make sure point of hook is where the meat of the crab is, this will result in alot more hook ups.
also check out previos threads on this topic, the togmater has some really good advice.

tog fishing

Hi,
my experience in blackfishing. use a sensitive line with little strech but touch enough to get the blacks out off were they live. 40 lb power pro should do it. now keep your line tight when fishing but keep the bait on the bottom. you do not want any slack line or you will not feel the bite. most of the time a tog will pick up the bait then pass it to their crushers. so you will feel little nibbles(you must wait) then when you feel a harder tug, this can be a few seconds. make sure your line is tight and rod pointing down and set the hook and if you hook the fish. start reeling to get him off the bottom. if after you feel the nibbles and then nothing else try setting the hook anyway but mostly that old balckfish has stole your bait. I hope this helps and good fishing to you. Dave

Hi:

First of all, I'm no authority ...but from my experience...don't lift the rod until you are ready to set the hook while reeling it up....if you feel the tap (nibble)...WAIT and wait some more..I don't set the hook until the pull (tug). I try not to move the bait at all after the first tap or 2nd tap..I wait for the pull...sometimes I even let out a drop more line after the waiting after the 2nd tap...of course, my bait could already be gone. But as far as I am concerned you need patience to wait for that pull.
