My main set up is an Avet 30w on a 5 1/2" Calstar Baby Boomer which I use mainly for chunking. I just happen to have a Brand new Tsunami stand up rod laying around and I figured I should try and put it to use instead of trying to sell it for a few measly bucks. Its a 5' 9" rod, 50-100, with 2 roller guides and regular guides in-between. It's not the greatest rod but I was thinking of adding a TLD 50 and using it for trolling. Thought it would make a nice back up or even a main rod for when the newbies come out fishin'. What do you guys think? The tld 50 too much? Should I put a tld 30 instead?

I use TLD 50's for trolling and stand-up. I have some custom west coast calstars for stand-up and Star 50-100 rods for the trolling. They are backed with 80lb izorline (i have a lot of it still) spectra and use 100 yards of 80 pound Momoi Smoke Blue Top Shot. I would use hollow core spectra for backing if I did not have a ton of izorline left. I would try to find older ones on Ebay or at a Flea market if this going to just be a spare.

My buddy just getting into the offshore set up outfitted his boat with tsunami rods, with international 50s. We have broken 3 of the rods so far. Just catching average size yellows in the NE canyons. I would recomend putting 30s on the rods they cant really handle any more drag then 18 pounds of drag max. I also wouldnt use spectra with a tsunami rod they arent really made well enough to handle the spectra that is stronger than most igfa braking strength. A 30 tld would work fine though on the rod i would assume.

I added a tld50 (lrs?) last year just add another 50 to my spread, but for some reason it kept getting hit both on the troll and while sharking. No, it had nothing to do with the reel, just dumb luck that it kept getting hit.

Anyway, it saw a lot of use. It was on a standard two roller offshore no-brand rod.

We had zero problems with it, even when sharks would go screaming off into the distance on it.

I really didn't want a graphite reel. I've heard bad things about them. But the guys who sold it swore by it and I trust them to stand behind it. So if it explodes, I'm sure they will make it right.

Anyway, it's a long way of saying - sure, set it out.

I used the TLD 50 and 30's for years, never had a problem with them but as Blake said I would put a TLD 30 on that rod.I prefer 30's on the troll,50's for the chunk or sharking.

I have TLD's lrs and the new TLD lrsA's (series that came out last year) in both 30's and 50's

They have perfomed great for the last seven years. The new ones I got are even better with the new handles and they are lower in price to be more competitive. I also have a TLD (Triton) 50 that is at least 15 years old and it still works great. I think they are great reels and I have slowly been replacing all my gold to these reels since they are lighter. Only big problem I heard of is the reel seats breaking after long fight with extreamly high drag applied.

I have two penn 50T's for sale if interested look in the classifieds section.

Good luck!
