I got a TLD 50LRS from my wife as a gift. I have not used this reel before and was hoping some of you have some info. I would be spooling it w/ 80# with braided backing. Will these reels hold up to big fish? - I heard rumors of the reel seats cracking.

ive used them for years and never had a problem..no hair line or stress cracks, and we fish them pretty hard in the winter too down in the keys

Hey Corazon,i use the 50's on all my big game standup gear.I've landed bluefin up to 200lbs with no problems, find a blank that can handle the abuse and spool up with Momoi Diamond.

have only heard of cracking the reel frame or seat when used with 100# line and a heavy drag (+33#). get some 130# spectron braid from cortland; it's hollow and you can use a loop-to-loop connection, around $60 for 600 yards. get a good shop to do it for you with a heavy-duty machine, they'll get it packed in hard. in the end, you be able to get 600 yards of backing over 200 yards of 80# mono.

and tie the reel on as a sinker...
