I have 2 friends that bought them. Both had problems with the anti-reverse not functioning properly and rust inside the reel (the bearings). They may be fine from a boat but they don't hold up in the surf.

FYI they have a disclaimer on the box warning not to subject the reel to water, sand etc. - enough said.

Not for $220.00

For another $300. you might want to consider the VS.Don't fool around,I've heard bad stuff about those reels, just like tman said, water & sand,No good.A freind of mine also has the taurus, the other night he hooked into a 22#er,I was right next to him & the real sounded like it was going to blow up,I said to him,"man that does'nt sound good",He replied back,"It's a piece of crap".
If your gonna be in the suds the VS is the way to go.

Every reel can have a bad day.

I've seen & heard a Van Staal turn bad.
A Penn 750 SS failed me on a 40 pounder.
However, a Shakespeare Alpha never failed. Maintenance is the key.
Tica Taurus is for artificial with braid line only.
Use Dolphin SE for bait fishing.
13 ball bearings, can't beat the smoothness and price. Even came with a spare spool exactly like the original.
But definitely not a reel that you can
dip in sea water, neither nor VS.
600 hundred dollars for a fishing reel ?
I guess that just another 4-wheel drive that never go off-road.

As far as I am concerned, if it isn't a VS or a Nautil spinner and you submerge it so that salt water gets in the bearings and the case, you better break it down, get out the salt and relube it before you fish the next day/week/month. The beauty of the old Penns was that you could take them down in 5 minutes. VS tend to be fine as long as the lube stays inside. Without service, the seals eventually go, and that's all she wrote. Once in a while, you get a lemon from the factory, but the new ownership is working hard to keep the assembly line lemon free. Nautil seem to get returned a lot. That's OK, They are cheap. Buy 3 of them, so you always have a good one and a backup with you, even if one is in the factory.
