A fisherman was killed by a 3 oz sinker as the sinker came out of water and hit him in the face at Jones Beach jetty on Friday.
While we ar not allowed overhead cast on party boats on the East Coast, party boats on the West Coast and Gulf of Mexico allow overhead cast and I always feel uncomfortable whenever I fish on party boats there as I know how dangerous it can be.
We should exercise extra caution when casting or lifting fish on jigs or poppers.

That's sad news. I believe casting isn't the big problem. You just have to look behind you a couple of times to check out for obstacles.
Lack of casting skills and inexperience will cause most casting injury's. Stay clear of rookies.

I've seen a lot more injury's on the retrieving end of fishing. Some people don't watch their line. Jigs will come flying out of the water if the fisherman is still jigging to the top of the water. Lures on fish at the end of the battle coming un-done will send a high velocity projectile of treble hooks onto the boat.

Safety is very important on a boat. It's a long way to the hospital from the deep water. Even fishing off a pier or jetties can be dangerous. I've seen people hook up on the rocks at jetties with their pole bent in half pulling very hard. If the hook bends, the weight will come screaming out of the water. Beware of the person you are fishing next to on a boat. If they are inexperienced, I stay clear or try my best to give them safety tips.

I personally suffer terribly (or rather my casting does) for fear of hurting someone on a head boat--not so much worried about KILLING anyone--there is a real freak element to that part of this story--but just cutting them up with a big set of trebles.

What's the matter...you have a little trouble counting that high??

The worst is when you see a jig come free from the fishes mouth and hurling toward the rail and you or the guy next to you if you are lucky. :):) OUCH WHEN THAT HAPPENS! Won't diamond jig on a party boat for blues cause of that....too many drunken bums
and idiots
....on land I like those guys for amusement.

You've got to be real careful around rookies. I was fishing the bow of a party boat a few weeks back and a guy across from me yanked his bass assasin out of the water, over his shoulder and whacked me square in the neck. Fortunately I got a hand on it just as he was yanking it back. People are just careless and inconsiderate most of the time, so you really need to keep your eyes open.

when i was 9 i got hooked around my eye socket, about 1/10th of an inch away from my eye.....happened when somone didnt look when casting. thing was buried deep.

also got hooked in the bicep by a jig flying out of the water. nice little scar, but nothing too bad.

being relaxed and making a conscious effort to be careful are key.

is this the fourth or fifth thread on this topic?I want to discuss here with different perspective as I observe it really hurt someone when using jigs and poppers without care. My one popping rod tip was broken and one other popping rod's guide got damaged twice while I put them in rod holders and some casted poppers and the poppers hit my rods. They are very experience fishermen, but the direction what they think they throw is somewhat differnt from the direction. I saw poppers were thrown very close to other fishermen's face.
