Had a very good start to the early season on bass last Saturday. Fished a small East End pond with a friend and between us we had about 30 bass to 2.5 and a bunch of BIG yellow perch. All the action on slow rolling small spinnerbaits.Can't wait until it warms up! LATER

I closed out the Pikeral Season at a up-state lake. The wind didnt wanna let up but I did rather good considering. A few Crappies, Yellows and Bass in the mix. I got a 27" Pick, followed up minutes later by a 31" Pickeral. Fun stuff on a flyrod. The panfish fell to shiners under a slip bobber, or a float-n-tube. I was using a white and crystal flash streamer of my own creation on the flyrod.

It feels good to be a little sunburned instead of chapped and frostbit!!

they never left.

i've been catching largemouths (on artificials) at my south shore suffolk pond for over a month now. they are a good month ahead of schedule.

too bad the c&r season has to end on the 15th, it would be nice if it would stay open until april 1st when trout season starts. i think they are starting to form pairs, but they are still weeks away from making beds.

i suppose we could still target yellow perch.
btw, how big was your largest yellow? i'll bet it was swollen with eggs.

I never could figure out exactly what "targeting " meant. If I am out throwing a rapala or an in line spinner or a small spoon, I could probably catch bass, but I might catch perch, bluegill, crappee, etc, so as long as I am not keeping any, how is targeting defined ?

They look for the obvious, tossing a big spinnerbait or 8" lizard around is quite obvious to what your targeting.

what crash just said.

also, if a conservation officer is observing you and you are seen repeatedly catching an out of season species without changing your fishing method (for example - by moving or using a substantially different lure or bait), then you could be ticketed for "targeting" an out of season species. then you get a chance to "tell it to the judge".

The most obvious targeting situation involving out of season bass, would be fishing the beds. This is what most Conservation Officers look for. Bedding bass are easy targets for sight anglers. Just as anglers who fish the beds are easy targets for Conservation Officers. A Word to the Wise!

Opi: Biggest yellow was about 2 lbs. ! without a doubt, the biggest perch either of us had ever seen. The ****** was about the same size. No wonder that pond has so many bass, plenty of forage. LATER

on feb 17, 2002, i caught my personal best yellow perch. it was 2.0 #'s and 13 1/2 ". it was loaded with eggs, so i took some pictures and released it. a real football. had the big yellow perch that you caught spawned yet?

the ny state record for yellow perch is 3#s 8oz
from lake erie in 1982. i wonder what the long island record is/would be.

how about it. anyone else ever catch any jumbo yellow perch on long island, or anywhere else?

As a kid I used to catch some giant yellow perch up on Lake George. Actually I think some of them may have been larger that what you say the State record is, but I realize that fish tend to grow in memory as the years go on. Recent years I have not seen any nearly the size that we used to catch back then ( late 60's ).
