Why are we shut down and the paryboats aren't? IS it just me or is this the biggest crock of junk youve ever heard!

Thnk about it, I can't take my boat out for porgys over the next two weeks, but if I want to I can go on a party boat and fish for them. How is this helping the porgy stock? It isn't and no one can tell me otherwise.

It's regs like this one that make me wonder what these so-called organizations are doing with my donations. In my book there simply is no excuse for allowing this to happen. We have been screwed big-time!

All I ever hear about from these groups is striped bass this and striped bass that. Wake up guys becasue while you're worrying about striped bass - the only fish that seems to be abundant - we're loosing everything else.

Hi Bassman,

I totally agree with you. The fish are there in great nimbers!! However, I am not privy to how and why these decisions are made. I have very little faith in the numbers.

I think this just drives a wedge between recreational fishermen and party/chater boats. We don't need this kind of agitation.

Seems to me that the bag limit is too high and size limit too small. Those little fish don't have enough meat on them once cleaned, and thats why people keep so many. If the size limit was raised, people would not have to keep so many ! Seems to me a short closed season that only applies to certain recreational anglers is a typical government bureaucrats way of dealing with a problem, and will not do much good.

The size and bag limits are just fine. Porgy populations are at an historical high right now and the regs have worked beyond anybody's expectations (mostly due to commercial reductions). Why make cuts when they are not necessary? If you take a look at the demographics of most of those who target porgies, you will find that they are sustenance anglers. They depend on catching enough fish in a day to make their trips economically viable.

Why is the recreational season closed to all except the party boats? I honestly don't know and I disagree also. If memory serves, the original season was going to be significantly shorter this year. The recs were going to be punished because there were so many porgies last year that we far exceeded our quota. However, at the last minute it was determined that porgy population had increased something like 200% just since last year. With that announcement, the season was opened early. I don't know what happened to cause the party boats to get an extension on the season, but it should have applied to everybody. There are LOADS of porgies just about anywhere you fish.

20 PORGIES

It's rules like this that will do 1 of 3 things.
1. Put un-necessary pressure on Seabass,as captains try to fill customers pails.
2. Make them Porgy pirates.
3. Put them out of business.
GREAT CHOICES,huh???

Porgy Regs Insane

Hey Bassman

I agree totally. As usual, us recreational fishermen are getting screwed again. There is no reason to shut down the season for two weeks. There are so many porgies out there that you can't help but catch them. And for those of us who enjoy eating them the fact that we have to sit by and wait for two weeks to get another crack is bunch a bull, especially while the Party boat guys can pick up all they want. This is just another case of where the government has no idea what they are doing.

It looks like a royal job to everyone

Hey Gami

I took a look and it looks like everyone is getting worked over and just does not make sense. All the so-called experts say there are plenty of porgies to go around, not to mention that opened the season early because the species was so plentiful. It makes you wonder what those geniuses in government are thinking.

I work in a business with too many numbers and thus have not closely followed the numbers and calculations made by the various government agencies to determine what the allowable catches should be. He is my take on the general procedure used:

Complaints are raised about the general unavailability of a certain species of fish. As a result some agency attempts to measure the approximate number of fish that are swimming and the number that are caught. The agency concludes that the numbers are low and that stricter limits should be put into place. So far so good. For example if someone were to measure winter flounder in current times and conclude that the limit should be 10 fish rather than the current 15 I would agree. Of course very few fisherman can catch as many as 10 in a day.

The problem as I see it comes from a regulated species after a number of years of regulations being in effect. Some of these species have rebounded and there is an increasing number of fish around. At the end of each year the agencies calculate the numbers caught versus what they thought should have been caught. If the numbers caught are up as they would be for a species with an increasing population, the resulting action is to reduce next years catch.

This is where the problem lies IMO. The agencies do not look at the picture in terms of the reproduction of the fish. It goes to reason that if the number of a species of fish are up, then the numbers of fish caught will also increase. But instead of acknowledging that the species is healthy, the agencies reaction in this situation is to further restrict the catch.

My apologies for the long post.
