Here's my take on the three best lures for yak fishing for stripers and blues.

Inexpensive, durable, and effective, they are, clockwise from left: the shad-and-jighead, a topwater spincasting lure; the bucktail jig, a bottom-fishing lure; and the Cape Cod, a trolling lure.

The advantages of the three are simplicity, effectiveness, and low cost.

And of the three, only one, the Cape Cod (center), requires bait -- a seaworm.

Equipped thus, I'd say a seakayak angler can successfully fish for most any New England inshore sportfish, bonito included.

I agree completely with you choice of lead heads + plastic as well as that sweet little bucktail you've got going there. I would throw in a bomber--either chicken scratch or schoolbus to round out you "must have" collection.

Gotta say I love a popper for great top water action. Used one yesterday in east moriches bay to get 1 4-5 lb. blue, a samll striped bass, and a 22 inch weakfish. Had my other stuff with me, but was having too much fun watching the fish hit. It's a good thing to switch to single hooks though. Trebles are to rough on fish you are releasing. I've never tried a trolling one like that...I'm going too though... Tx

swimming plug

I agree with your selections and I really like the single hook on a kayak, but I really have to toss a swimming plug in the mix there, what you can do with plugs that you cant do with those lures is really slowly walk them. o I would say bombers are great-they are cheap and are a plug that you dont lose your action when you crank slow. Best colors-school bus and ofcourse black for nights. I always crush the barbs down!

Those toes must be rigged weedless Texas style, cause I don't see the hook!!! ;) But on the serious side, I thow a lot of swimmers too, but I always get more hits on tins like my Hopkins No-eql 1/2 - 3/4 oz and the Kastmasters in the same size. What do you guys think?

I troll for stripers at night and my 3 favorite lures are 1. black bomber, 2. black bomber, 3. black bomber. It is a killer. Only reservation is that with all those trebles on it, the fish tend to body hook themselves which is bound to reduce survivability upon release.
