the first thing I thought was that they were bought out by AOL.

I stopped buying Penn reels after they came out with thier gold & black spinfisher series. They were definitely inferior to the green reels. I didn't really care for the skirted spool reels either. Maybe the quality suffered.....they were #1 in quality and popularity, I'm not so sure anymore.

I always liked thier service dept. & they were pretty good with honering warrantys

a few times I boxed up my Penns & shipped them out for repairs & was satisfied with the work. I just hope the new company continues to carry the ball.

Striker3,
I had a few TA90'S and Platnum 100's when they came out.I was very happy with them for the money. You couldn't find an offshore reel with a lever drag for that kind of money.A few years back I did sell them still in great working condition and upgraded to Shimanos. The okumas were used for sharks up to 300 lbs.The only problem I had was sticky drags which I solved that problem with shimano drag lube.

I have a few Penn reels.
704z,6500ss,5500ss,4500.
They can definetly take alot of punishment and cannot complain.
Neither reel has ever failed me and always performed reeling in any fish I ever caught.

I would agree there are other brands out there more upto date with technology.
You have shimano's, Tica, Abu , Diawa emblem z series etc...

I just bought a tica reel to use in the surf this year. Havent used it yet but it feels awesome! 10 ballbearings super smooth!!

I will say this... if any of my Penn reels ever brake I will more than likely
by a different brand.

Dont get me wrong penn makes a good product but for a few more $$$ you can get a reel with more bells & whistles!

My Two Cents

When I was a kid, I worked summers on a charter out of Harwich, Mass. The skipper used Penn 4/0's filled with wire exclusively. They were and I assume still are, a strong reel that never failed us. Another boat I fished with, we used to have them falling apart on us as the clients were hooked up. (Maintenance issues.....)

Then I used the Diawa Sealine series for wire line jigging on a third boat and I now own several of them. In my humble opinion, they are a real workhorse in its' class. A commerical friend of mine swears by them for cod jigging

23seacraft,
you are right about the 4/0's. They are the only Penn's I still own.I use them for trolling wire for bass.I would perfer using a shimano or an Everol lever drag but they don't have a chromed bronze spool.I would have to replace the spools every season or two.For now I'll stick with the penn's until someone else make a reel that can handle wire.
