--Fisherman hauls up a coffin in net

Associated Press ? June 28, 2002

SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine ? A commercial fishermen hauling in his catch found something extra in his net: a coffin.

The captain called the Coast Guard at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to report what he described as a metal box with handles on the side that was retrieved off Mount Desert Island, said Kyle Archibald of the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard referred him to the state police, and the state police referred him to the medical examiner's office.

The skipper was able to identify the funeral home based on markings on the casket, and it was determined that the coffin came from a burial at sea two years ago, a state police spokesman said.

The coffin was returned to its resting place.
