The good Capt was kind enough to put his world debute of his latest creation on this board - as a favor to me - but he picked the wrong the thread to do it.

At his request, I've moved it here - for all of you to read and comment on, if you want.

The MAXIMISER!!!

Hi Lep,

Here it is being unveiled on your forum.

The MAXIMISER!!!

Maximise the rod sensitivily!!!

Maximise your fun while catching fluke in 3-10' of water using bucktails weighing less than 3/4 oz. Shinne**** Star style that is.

Maximise your catching potential!

Maximise the minimum amout of weight added to the blank during construction. Everything installed on a blank decreases sensitivity!
Therefore, no grips, light weight guides, shortest wraps possible, no underwraps and no tip wrap.

Mazimise hand contact with the blank.

Forecast RX6 Graphite
SB843
10-17#class line
5/15 to 3/4 oz lures.

I can tell you this new rod fished great and was very comfortable to use. 2 lighter lure weight models are on the drawing board. Stay tuned.

Capt Neil

Looks terrific Capt. Neil!

I see you took your handle cues from the latest rage on the BassMasters Tour, meaning no handle at all - only a reel seat, butt cap and nub in from of the seat. Can't get any more sensitive than that!!!

Nice stuff, but tell me, can your new "Maximizer" be used in 80' of water with an 8oz sinker on it? Or do you envision an even "Maxi-er" Maximizer for MY kind of fluking?

I have to swing by your place soon with my #1 crewmember for you to put together a DNY Impact for him. Gotta do it soon too - otherwise what I anticipate to be an avalanche of Maximizer sales will push his delivery back to next season!!! :)

best, Lep

Hi Lep,

Thank you and I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

You bet there is a deep water MAXIMIZER!!! Can be used for fluke, sea bass and porgys!

I expect to take some hits on this design. This is for a fluke bucktailer that can stand up against normal convention.

Hi Mike,

Good to see your post. I hope all is well.

Yes, it is a Long Islander, and it is graphite. The cost as seen is $140. And that is the way I will wrap them all. It is all about the most sensitivity! I know, I know it looks funnier than a spiral wrapped rod!!! Ha!!!

I taped the reel seat and guides on about 30 minutes before I left for the Shinne**** Star on Sat. Caught 13 fluke using a 1/2 oz pink SPRO. 3 keepers and I dropped the 4th keeper by not asking for the net. The braid broke. Rotten garbage, it broke 4 times on me that day. I had a great time catching with it. It felt so good in my hands with a small spin reel. Today I wrapped the guides on and gave it the first coat of finish.

Sorry the finish won't be cured till next week BUT then you can test it.

Neil,

I'm heading back down to North Carolina in a few days for a couple of weeks, so I'll have to take a rain check on the field testing.

Its funny but I actually took out my old ultralight spinning gear this week with the intention of bucktailing some fluke. Gotta love that light tackle action.

Another masterpiece!

Hey Neil!

As always, your creations are goergous works of art that fish even better than they look ( that is hard to do, too!). I love the name, also
!

I'm sure these new beauties are going to quickly become as popular as every other rod in the Long Islander Series. And, I'm also sure that I'll be getting one before long :)!

Hi Scott,

Yep!!! We can put metallic Fuschia over the guides, BUT it is limited. Trying to reduce as much weight as possible!!!

I am designing a lighter version, 5/8 oz and less for the guys that fish with 15# line and less. The one in the pic will do 3/4oz lures and more I am sure if i asked it to.

Scott, you gotta feel t5his in your hands, especially with a keeper attached.

Hi,

You have a great idea but I am laughing. Can you imagine trying to talk a guy into a rod with no grips that is also spiral wrapped? If I could do that I should buy some lottery tickets that same day.

I have to say it is a very nice rod to hold while waiting for the bite. Am using braid on that rod. The sensitivity was definitely there.

I laugh at myself. Many builders are going way out of their way to beautiful their creations and here I come with parts missing and short wraps.

Have you gone to www.2coolfishing.com our sister web site down in Texas? Check out the pics of some of the rods built done there.

Keeping unnecessary weight off the blank is what make some of today's "off the shelf" rods better than some of the offerings from some well known "custom" builders.

Fancy wraps, triple wraps, heavy thread, and too much finish simply dampen the action on a good blank.

Custom doesn't need to imply "ornate", rather maximum functionality, tailored to a particular user for a particular application.

Simple and light, yet strong, get it done. Especially for fluke jigging, tog, etc.

Good topic ...

Neil,

That is the same rod (blank) you donated for the bash right? If so it is a fluke machine I have been using it every time bucktailing. I guess you did a few upgrades to it because mine has cork grips and it liiks like different guides.
GREAT ROD!!!!!

That rod has great sensitivity and a good backbone. Very light. I would recommend it in a second. I may even want another one. Will you be stocking them like the LI series. Basically will Dave at Npt R&R be getting any?

Hi,

I am not sure as I did not keep a record of the Bash rods.

Yes, I hope to have some at Dave's NR&R. BUT, I need time to build them and that will come after the 2008 orders are caught up.

I can make the MAXIMIZER on almost any rod. It works but I doubt how many anglers will be willing to own one. Maybe I should make the raffle rods on the Seminar/Charter MAXIMIZERS. That would be one way to get them out there. Ha, haa!

The MAXIMIZER

Hi Fredd,

I am working on the second model which will be a 15# class line rod. This is a 3/8 to 5/8 oz lure range.

The original is a 17# class line rod but I think strong enough to handle heavier weights. It worked a 1/2 oz and 3/4 oz jig just fine.

Am looking for the right blank to use for an ocean model, 6-8 oz lure weight range.

I will be on the Shinne**** Star tomorrow. It is the opening of porgy season and Capt John will be fishing in Peconic Bay. Hopefully we can max out on porgys and then go flukin'.

Take care.

The MAXIMIZER-2

Hi,

Tested #2 today on the Shinne**** Star. We started off porgy fishing so I was able to test this rod using 2-3-4 oz sinkers and caught a few beautiful pounders. With 10# Fireline I had a blast. Also caught a keeper weak fish in deeper water> This new model is definitely a keeper. We did not flukein the bay so we have to wait for that report.

The MAXIMIZER was tested in the ocean in about 60' water with 5 oz sinker. It worked well with that weight and I had fun reeling in a nice sea bass. I did use a 4 oz silver bullet drifting for fluke. It did bounce the bullet very nicely but I did not get any bites.

I am very pleased with the sensitivity of these rods. I think eliminating the grips is the factor. I am still looking for a better way to eliminate or improve the reel seat and hopefully make these rods even more sensitive.

These rods work great BUT they do look a bit funny. Funny I can live with.

Neil
