I read the Catskill park master plan online . NYS owns 292,000 acres in the Catskills and the rest is privatly owned. And the state has to pay 9 million dollars property taxes every year to the local gov'ts

I hope they put more land into the park. The area around Monticello , Bethal, Forestburg, Glen Spey, Eldred, is probably the nicest part of the Catskills but the area is being developed . This area needs protection ! Alot of the land is owned by hunting clubs, the Boy scouts and by Nature groups. Eldred Preserve owns 3000 acres , the Boy Scouts own like 20,000 acres and private hunting/nature groups own thousands more. But the casino is bringing in alot of downstate people who build summer homes in the area. Since the Casino and Bethal woods opened I've seen new developments in the area:mad:

I own 25 acres surrounded by NYC water shed and NYS in Colchester.
I'm happy.:)
25 acres next to public land is great. people who own large tracts of land do no harm. Its those housing developments I see popping up around Monticello. I've been going to the Catskill area since 1976 and things didn't change much until that Casino and Bethal woods performing arts was built. Its bringing in alot of city people. I was hunting on state land in Bethal , It was the 2nd day of the deer season and I'm sitting next to a tree. I looked over and I see these 2 guys walking down the trail with buckets to get maple syrup. The woods were full of hunters and these 2 city people decide they want maple syrup !!!!

Not easy or cheap to buy up land to add to a state park. Doesn't NYC own large chunks of land up there for the reservoirs?

Yes.
Mike my house Borders thePepacton Reservoir and NYC owns all the land that boarders it and makes it almost impossible to build any future homes around it
