Hi,

Teaser rigs mean many things to many people.

I will relate to how I fish for fluke(summer Flounder).

A simple rig is tie a sinker at end of line. I place a dropper loop about 4" above the sinker. To this loop i install a fluke hook and leader, about 36" leader.

I place another dropper loop about 15' above the sinker. Atb this place I add a teaser, feathered hook, bucktail, a fly, skirts, jelly worms, anything that will tease a fluke off the bottom.

I usually catch my biggest fluke on the teaser About 15' above the sinker.

Other fishermen tie teasers to silver bullets(used in place of sinkers).

I hope this give you an idea. Other fishermen do it differently. Each of us hasm our favorite way.

\Capt Neil

Teasers are used for codfish, striped bass, weakfish and almost any type of fish we catch around Long Island, New York.

Thanks for the info, however, I am wondering exacly what is a Silver Bullet. Here in Va., it's a Coors Lite. I'm sure that it is some type of weight, but not sure what style. Cn you explain? THANKS!

Hello foxfire,
A silver bullet is a fluke rig that is essentially a round chromed ball of lead with a free swinging hook adorned with bucktail. It's been gaining popularity over the last few years and has really proven itself. Most guys use between 3 and 5 oz.
Personally,I prefer the Coors Lites over these things, but there's no denying that they work.

Almost forgot to expand on captneilf's explanation on a teaser.
When casting(be it surf or freshwater or anything else),a leader is tied with the plug at the terminal end,and a large dropper loop is tied about 12 inches in front of it.In that loop is the "teaser".It could be a fly, small plastic,or any other small jig you otherwise wouldn't be able to cast. What it does is make the larger plug look like it's going after a smaller baitfish that will many times induce a strike.(and most times it's on the teaser, seems to piss the fish off).
Hope I helped.

Hi mocean.

I tie a dropper loop about 4"s long. I put that loop thru the hook eye and around the teaser.

I do not use a leader. I do not want the teaser to wrap around the lower rig.

gruvekinG,

thanks for the assist.

Most will probably agree that we catch far more fish on a teaser than on the plug. I often feel the only reason I have the plug on is so that I am able to cast the teaser. Think of it as long distance fly casting ! It works !

Hi all.

I was just rereading this thread and I hope I have not confused anyone.

What I wrote applies to bottom fishing, dropping a sinker to the bottom. The other posts apply to surf casting although I do see fishermen bottom fishing with the lure and teaser on the same leader.

Skates, move away?

Just a tip that works pretty often. Skates and fluke definitely dwell in the same areas. If you are having a skating party ( oh no, not another spinner!!). DON'T move to another area. Usually the skates will bite on the weaker portions of the tide, when it is hard to get good drifts.

When you find yourself getting too skatey, just tie your fluke rig leader anywhere from 12 to 18" above your sinker. Skates are always shoveling through the bottom and are often attracted to the bait by the smell. Fluke, being predatory, will look up and attack the swimming bait off the bottom if it looks good.

That is why, as Capt. Neil says, he usually catches his biggest fluke on the teaser. This works for almost all rigs, silver bullets, spin n' glows, skirts, rubber squids, etc.!

I'm just wondern' if anyone has the resources, and is willing to go to the trouble to show a couple pictures or drawings of this type of rig, and a silver bullet rig also? I think that I have the right idea, but the old saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" means just that. Anyone game?

Goto STRIPERSURF.COM then click on fishing tips.
Once there look for the article on how to rig red gills & teasers.
It will have a picture on how to and detailed explanation. You can use different types of teasers doesnt have to be a red gill.
I make my teaser 4" down from the barrel
swivel and my end lure about 24" to 28".
You dont have to go to those extreme measurements they give but it will give you an idea.
Alot of information can be found on that website so check it out.

>The teaser should be tied at least 30-36 inch from the plug some peple tie it even longer than that

My bad.I'm thinking "about 2 feet" and type "12 inches".
I don't usually go to 36",but whatever works is good enough for me.
