With the 25 fish bag limit on sea bass, I figure that I'll try my hand at pollock fishing after I limit out on sea bass on my next offshore trip. If my memory serves, I used to use an ava with a tube and two surgical tube teasers above the jig when I fished for them out in Montauk (I could be wrong, that over 20 years ago and I was pretty young). Do you think this approach would work while anchored over a wreck? Or would bait fishing be a better approach? I don't have any illusions of loading them up like the old days in Montauk, but if I can get one or two along with the seabass, I'll be pleased. Any input would be appreciated.

I usually jig the whole trip while I'm on an offshore trip. I use a 10-14 ounce jig with 2 orange tube teasers above the jig and I get large seabass and pollock. The only thing is, if you're gonna jig pollock, do it BEFORE you catch your limit of bass. The pollock off Jersey on wrecks will usually hit much better just as the sun is coming up, so resist the urge to fish for bass if you want to get a pollock on a jig. Even though jigging works well for pollock, I've seen most of them come up accidentally on clams by guys fishing for bass. Another way to do it is get some whole squid (preferably fresh) and drop them down with a 6/0 hook on a 3 foot leader about 10-15 feet off the bottom.

Try Bait

Well Gama the biggest pollack i have caught were on bait. Chunks of mackerel to be exact. Yes we used to use red jelly worms and get them also and the old vike jigs with a touch of modification! But bait always was the ticket for bigger pollack. I once had a double header of fish over 40lbs both on bait. That was like lifting the queen mary and my rod was like pretzel the whole way up. You must be real careful with pollack they like to hit and run back into the Wreck so you got to turn there heads up real fast or your a goner! Jig fishing you get them coming up so you got a better chance but with bait hit hard and crank like a MF'er and don't let up till you got them a good way off the bottom . Good luck

I agree with WreckinBall. For Pollock bright colors tubes, with the FLO GREEN, working well. You can also use flies like they do on the northern codfish boats in the Orange and Pink colors. Over here this is where the S&G 9 and 12 oz jig slayed the fish along with the Vike jigs. Drop it down, and you could either squid it or jig it off the bottom. Just remember if you are squidding to not crank you would do for bluefish! And for you could catch pollock on your clam rigs like Wreckinball mentioned. Drop it down to the bottom, take a few turns off, lock the reel up and then hold on!
