LOST A REEL

Wasn't taped on though.

I had picked up an old Abu Garcia rod at a yard sale. Nice handling - seemed perfect for light tackle.

Went out bought a nice little Shimano spinning reel to go with it. Don't remember the model it was several years ago. All I know is I paid around $80 for it.

Checked out the whole rod before I bought it - except the reel seat. Figured - rest of the rod looked to be in good shape - didn't even think to look at the reel seat.

Welllllllllll........

As luck would have it - the first day I used it casting for flounder from shore with worms - a big ol' bass grabbed the bait. The seat split in two places. There I am trying to hold the now separated reel & fight the fish. It eventually pulled out of my hand - tore off 2 of the guides (guess they weren't in as good a shape as I thought) & bye bye reel. Last I saw of it - it was headed up river at a high rate of speed.

Never bought another "yard sale bargain" again.

I never gave the concept of balancing the setup by moving different reels (weights) forward or back any thought, after reading this thread I'm kind of sorry I have a reel seat on my 11' Lami. Also makes constructing your own rod from a blank much more apealing without the need to glue up a reel seat, all you need are the guides and cork tape for the grip. I have some thoughts for a winter project already!
