This morning around 8am a call came over the radio that this guy took a bass about 30 lbs while trolling spoons outside jones inlet.I asked him for sea conditions out there, being the wind was blowing about 25 kts. He responded saying"it was 4-6's with occassional 8's thrown in.He said he was taking a beating in a 25' boat and he was by himself.I had to remind him that we lost about 8 or 9 fisherman this year on the south shore. Then he said he was going to turn in.I know it was starting to lay down as the morning went on but when its kicking out there is it really worth taking a chance just for a fish?Come on guys!!!

Paulie, I didn't hear that guy, but I heard a couple others say things like, "yeah, it's 6'-8' but very fishable." I took a poke outside this morning to take a look, yes, it was fishable, in a 42' Duffy it was fishable. These guys are AH's, plain and simple. If you were outside on a 25' boat this morning, you were getting beatin' up pretty good, I don't care what they say. Been there, done that, no thanks.

PS Heard something on 16 about a boat going down, and people in the water, maybe FI inlet, not sure.

On a side note

Paulie,

Believe it or not after the guy came in he headed back out and hour later because there was nothing doing inside. He was trying to coax another boat to go with him and they declined. He is out there ALL the time usually by himself, Cant tell you how many times he hasn't been able to get back in till a tide change. Yeah I get discouraged inside too, But thats when I drive around inside twice as much trying EVERYTHING. Not worth the risk at all....

Hope he made it back in....

If this guy keeps it up we'll be reading about him in Newsday...in the obits.
Friend said on Sunday he tried to hget out of JI but no can do. Boats out there could only troll north-south, since other way would be too risky. A fish just isn't worth it.
On days like we had this weekend, and if the traffic was low, I would troll the back side of JI and even swift creek for bass and blues, and it works. No law saying trolling only works outside, just don't go as deep. Had bass off short beach by the rip and, in past years, all the ****tails you wanted from swift. Saves the day.
Be safe.

Not worth it

Actually sometimes those conditions are more "fishable" in a 25ft than a 40 ft boat. It depends a lot on the wave period. A 25 footer will sometimes float up, and over them like a duck, with little roll when a 40 will roll like mad.
Anyway it's still not worth the risk (or the beating) for a fish.

Freddy,
I have a 25' boat and to tell the truth I'd rather be on the 40ft'er.But if your rocking around in real bad seas its just not that much fun and thats what its all about.

What do you consider outside?????

Do you consider the mouth outside? Sat.afternoon, We fished the outgoing, right in front of the west bar, anchored, using fresh B.chunks,& did very well.I'll tell you we were'nt the only ones there neither. There was a little swell, but layed down as the day went on.I think it was very fishable. You have to remember, fish love turbulance,Churning up the bottom, baitfish, getting thrown around in the wash. That guy your talking about,is pretty insane to fish by himself. But the odds were greatly increased of catching a big fish,in those types of conditions. Some times you gotta take it to extreme. But not by yourself.

Jpfsurf,
To me, outside is past the tip of the jetty where you are exposed to the ocean from any angle. But, "inside" the inlet can be rough too, depending on the wind and wave direction. Get a south wind blowin 20-30 kts for a few days and you get rollers through the inlet. On an east wind, the west bar may be fishable, but watch for a rogue wave. South or west blow, the bar is probably breaking. North wind, the inlet may be sloppy, but once you turn east or west and are in the lee of the land, the ocean can be nice (worse the farther out you go).
Just be safe.

Jpf,
I believe he was in 40' of water. He said it himself that he was getting his ass kicked.I know it was also laying down as the morning went on.The wind started slowing up around 10 am,but at 8am it was howling.Remember, one wrong move while your fighting the fish, gaffing or netting the fish and you can be in trouble. What happens if you should take a wave over the side while your standing in the stern, who's going to call for help? Its not worth a fish.

jpfsurf, sitting on the hook on the West bar doing clam bellys with a SW wind on the incoming is perfect, you will lay real nice. Trolling wire in 40' of water outside in 6'-8' on a 25' vessel all alone is crazy. Two different things, that's comparing apples to oranges.

just my $.02
