I am fairly new to the South Shore of L.I. (2 years) and upgraded to a boat fit for offshore fishing.

I have followed the threads here and have found them helpful, but still feel the need for more before I drop $'s on gear.

Would anyone recommend a store in the Islip/Brookhaven were the folks would be helpful.

Also, I am pretty much in the middle of F.I. and Moriches inlet. Does anyone have a strong preferences for a starting point for either shark or tuna ??

Last question, Is there a VHF channel that off shore guys typically stick to ??

Thanks for any info.

Alan:

I fish offshore, live in Bayport, and my boat is in Moriches. My recommendations are:

(tackle shops listed in no particular order)

Capt. T's in Bayport (offshore gear & bait, plus the owner Rick is very knowledgable)

J&J in Patchogue (offshore gear & bait)

J&H in Oakdale (lots of offshore gear & bait)

B&B in Center Moriches (lots of offshore gear & bait)

For Hudson Canyon fishing, Moriches is the closest run on the south shore- however FI is a safer inlet.

As far as I can tell, people start talking on 68 then go to another channel. I would recommend monitoring 16 at all times in case of a distress call from another offshore fisherman (the "buddy system").
