That?s the kind of report I've been getting?. It seems that a few bass never completed their migration and there are scattered schools chasing sandeels along the beach.

Hello Space,
The south shores of LI are not very different than the Montauk grounds. Also, each area shares big fish and baitfish throughout the season! Since you asked about the spring hatch?. Well, in the spring we have the standard early sandeel and spearing run?but if you want to seduce the elusive cow? Contrary to other spring beliefs, use bigger lures at a ?selective? feeding period and places!

What do I mean by this? Well, we have the early sea robin run (also a striper?s delicacy), the last of herrings & tinker mackerel run and the early flux of bunker! All these big fish candy needs a little more attention. As the cows are coming out of their migration and lethargic mode, they start feeding on substantial offerings? That is why most spring runs? many early ?chunkers? seduces the biggest basses first.

OK, let?s get to the ?bottom? of this? providing that the normal spring lures are swimmers, small buckies and small plastics? I generally use bigger offering when I know the cows are around. Although most times you will get quantity on smaller lures? the bigger and wiser are on the bottom! I will try to use the biggest and slowest ?bottom? reaching lures such as big darters, bucktails, slow moving Charlie graves (bunker pattern), and big plastic bodies. The key is to work it slow around deep pockets near shallow banks (warm water) where the fish will be active during the ebb tide.

Think structure, bait and find a deep ambushing spot where you have a good idea where the bass are! Once you?ve got all that down? Present the offering right and you will be rewarded for your hard work!

Hello,
At this time the water is warmer than the usual and there are a few quality bass being caught near your area! I am also hopeful that the sand-eels will be there in big numbers!
