I am looking for a 2 pieces surf rod maily for jigging bucktail or plugging. Last season, I got the Penn 704z bundle with Ugle Stick BWS 1100 9 feet rod. The combo was a little too heavy for frequent casting.

I just got a Tica that seems pretty sweet and is very light. That 704 is a heavy reel, and might be where the weight is comming from.

JP is right on the money.
The 10 ft xs 101ms is a great all around rod. You will be very happy with this stick and it will be a rod that can handle a wide range of chores.
the 1 pc if you can, is the way to go.

I use a penn 704z on a 10ft St.croix Ben doer Surf rod.
I toss anything from 3/4oz bucktails and up, 7/8 to 1.5oz swimming plugs, Tins 3/4oz and up, Poppers 1oz and up.

The 704z feels well balanced with this set-up and its a 2pc surf rod.
I can cast for long periods with no Fatigue.

Get your hands on a St.croix,Lami, or Star rod and feel the difference compared to that uglystick.

I know the 704z weighs 23oz but if you match it up with the right rod you shouldnt have a problem.
704z is a great reel and I converted mine to Bailess!

HEY IBEW, All the rods you mentioned are great . HE will see a big diff. from the ugly stick. The 704 is not to heavy on these rods. I had good luck with the slammer series also.
