The problem with MOST surf fishing clubs is they get very competitive with the NY Surf contest. The club earns points for the 10 biggest Weakfish, Bluefish, and Striped Bass each month. If you get caught up in this competition, you end up feeling guilty when you go Fluke fishing. You either don't go Blackfishing, or you go less often than you would otherwise. Club members with respectable points totals won't share their spots with you, reminding you that you are in "competition" with them. Most clubs ARE willing to share technique though.
If it's cameraderie you seek, just fish the same spots regularly. Just as you recognize someone who is "always there", they will recognize you as well. You will get FAR more information about "where" from this BBS and from the fishing reports on this site, than you would at a years worth of club meetings. The only exception I have found to guarding "secret" spots is the Salty Flyrodders, who will share information readily, probably because they are not competitive.
