one of the first things I would do is check out the pier on Wrightsville beach, I believe it's named Johnny Mercer Pier. By mid april there should be some life there. I think they sell shrimp and squid for bait. It might be a good idea to bring along a fairly long surf rod to cast further out since the low tide comes out to almost the end of the pier. Why not bring some "yankee" bait down there like some clams and sandworms (they don't sell that)if you can keep them alive long enough. And if the surf scene is slow, I recommend a 20 minute drive to Carolina Beach. There are a few party boats there that bottom fish out in the gulf stream for grouper and snapper.
