What can I say I was seriously stuck at the Demo entrance last night. Started out fishing feild 5 but decided to relocate to feild 2. When I got there I saw some activity at the Demo entrance cut and decided (against better judgement) to drive just to the end of the 4 wheel entrance. I say against better judgement due to the fact that I wasn't carrying my 4x4 equiptment. Anyway engaged 4 wheel drive then it happened, 3/4 of the way down my 4 wheel drive shuts off(push button).
Well it didn't take long before I was completley bogged down, thank goodness I wasn't blocking the road completly. Not knowing what the problem was I went through the basic procedures by putting the truck in nuetral then engaging the 4 wheel but nothing was happeng. I have been stuck before but this was a major problem. Just as I convinced myself that I was going to be towed out of there along came Will (Toyotaoffroad91). Will I shout out , hey what's up!. Will say's>> "man you look really stuck LOL".
Will can you tow me off the road to solid sand ?. No problem says Will. Let me tell you Will's FJ cruiser is the awsomist FJ I have ever seen , real sweet. O.K we strap up and Will tows me to harder ground. The problem still remained, I had no 4 wheel drive. Will say's I won't leave ya here until your off the beach even though I said I was going to call towing. Well after 3-4 attempts we were having no luck pulling through the mess that was created when they "fixed the road:mad:".
An hour into it and we weren't getting anywhere. As we pondered what to do next along came 3 guys in a Dodge 2500 super duty. Hey you guys need a hand:tu:confused: Yeh man the more the merrier:). Well let's just say that Will had to pull him out too
. After a few attempts with the Dodge and Wills truck they gave up. Now it's dark and it's getting late. Here comes another Dodge 1500 HEMI. Hey shouts the driver ,what can we do to help?. Wel let's just say there help was very appreciated but Will had to pull them out as they were burried to there chasi
. After a few more attempts with the HEMI Will got to thinking. Will decided that he must get my Exlorer onto more stable sand. Well lets just say that Will and his TOYOTA FJ CRUISER ARE THE BEST. We had enough momentum that there was no stopping , it was full steam ahead.
I can't thank enough all the fellow fishermen that helped out. Thanks to George, Brian, Manny and Butter . Although there attempts with the Hemi didn't work there true colors and anthusiam were very appreciated, thanks guys
. Also thanks to the guys in the Dodge 2500 cudos to you guys as well for trying. I really appreciate it.
Last but not least, a special thanks too Will (Toyotaoffroad91) without you dude I'de be selling something to pay off that towing bill:confused:. Can't thank you enough. Will your a class act. I owe you big time.
Moral of the story, never leave home without your 4 wheel drive gear and have the 4 wheel drive checked before heading out. Funny how things work out, I have towed and help at least a dozen trucks throughout my years on the beach, man I'm glad there are good people still out there helping too
. Tight lines>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Martin

It's nice to see others helping out...

There was an Explorer framed out late last week blocking the demo access road. You could squeeze past, but just as easy could slide right into him.

So I stopped, helped dig out the frame and then proceeded to rock it out using the tow strap. Took a few tries since my little SUV probably weighs almost 1,000 lbs less. But, with a little finese and persistence, we managed to get it out without getting myself stuck.

What pissed me off, was a guy who drove past making some comment about me being stuck. I guess he assumed because my smaller SUV had a tow strap hooked up to it that I was stuck. Had he actually stopped to help, he would have seen I was trying to pull a MUCH LARGER vehicle out. A little help would have been nice.

I always stop and offer to help...
Nice to see others do the same

Man I can only imagine what it would have cost me to have Higbie Towing remove me from the 100 yards that I was stuck at. I know there was a Nissan Maxima stuck 30 feet from the pavement last yearcand he was charged $250.00 >>>>>>>>>>>OUUUUUCCCCCCHHHHHHHH!!!!!

It amazes me, they pretty much have ya by the [email protected] I would pay a fee like boaters do for sea tow. The insurance cost for a fee like $50.00 per year wouldn't be so bad. The tow companies are a bunch of vultures. You think they would understand but I guess business is business. I am sure that there is a fisherman that fishes the open beaches that drives a tow truck. Anyway I guess the only way to counter the costs is to stay together as community and help each other out whenever possible. I know of a few ;)that went beyond the call of duty. Those who help out are good people and those that ignore will find out one day for themselves. >>>>>>>>>>>Martin

getting stuck.....

I'm a habitual:rolleyes: One more time and they put me down

A couple of tips.

1) Some 4x4s have a solenoid that engages the hubs when you push the magic button. This solenoid sometimes fails, but you hear the little click and think you're OK, so off you go, only to bog when you hit the soft stuff. What I do is before I commit, I find a patch of soft sand close to the entrance / exit, and run through it to make sure my hubs engaged. Also, I located the shaft on my Blazer so in a pinch, I can engage it by hand.

2) Some 4x4s use a vacuum switch for engaging 4W drive. During long periods of disuse (off-season) they sometimes get clogged. A transmission repairman who sees this all the time recommended that I "exercise" this switch by putting it in and out of gear a couple times a week during the off season.

3) Check all the easy "little" things that can cause problems on the beach, like making sure your battery is secure, the wires are tight and not rubbing (wearing out) against brackets and whatnot, stuff like that. Bring some common tools, like a hack saw for cutting away a broken exhaust pipe, and a battery pack for when there is no one around to jump you. Also, spray out the underside completely after each time (or couple times), or at least once a week. Getting all the salt and sand out will make a big difference over the long haul.

Will is a good man, good angler and his truck is a beast!!! His helping out is no suprise to me at all. 4x4 problems are out of the control of the driver and Martin knows what he is doing in the sand. Let's remember that even if you air down you can get stuck so when you see a follow angler let's not jump to conclusions and just help them. Leave the day trippers stuck with the tow bill but offer them the park police phone number :)

One tip to check if 4-wheel drive is engaged is to turn it on while in neutral, put into reverse then neutral and then drive. Drive in a full circle and if your wheels start skipping on the pavement then stop and straighten out as you are locked and loaded for sure.
