Hi Wreck
Placement of the stripper guide has many factors to consider. Reel size, rod length, number of guides, ring size, where you put the reel. The way I place the guide is to do a static test. then go out and test cast watching for the line to either bunch up against the stripper guide (in which you would move the guide forward) or to slap the blank.(move the guide back toward the reel) Use baby powder on the blank & guide.Alot easier to see !!!
Hope this helps.

Hi,

I can't say it any better than rodcrafter did. That short paragraph says it all.

When I do this with a customer I use a 1 or 2 oz sinker and have customer cast easily. When I have to do this by myself I find it harder to do.

Always use the reel you will be using when fishing.

Thanks rodcrafter.

Fugi LC Surf guides

Hi Capt.
Your welcome.
If you remember I posted a while ago about the LC surf guides. Let me say this about them. On the topic of stripper placement, It's a little more time consuming to place the guide, but it's worth it. With power pro on a VS 150 (I wouldn't go any bigger on the spool diameter) I'm able to consistantly cast 165 yrds. This is on a 9 ft. lami s-glass blank. On the same blank with traditional size guides, I was able to only get 145-150 yrds. And there light weight is also a plus, 6 guides & a top weigh the same as 1 50mm & 1 20mm bsvlg hardloy guide. Now for the negative. With mono, Lets just say they don't work very well. Mono is to stiff to funnel into a 20 mm stripper. No matter where I place it.

Hi,

Great informative post!.

Thanks Joe.

I have not had occasion to use those guides yet. Your post has given me the incentive to do so. Thank you for sharing.

Most of my surf rods start with a # 30 or 40 hi frame BSVLG. This method was criticed by a shop in Hatteras. They still believe in 75mm or bigger wire guides. What they don't know is that rod I built for a relative who fishes there casts like a dream. The poor guy felt badly after they picked it apart.

Take care,

Hi Capt. Neil
Here's a starting point for you. From the tip no top installed, on the 9 footer, 5 1/2" 8mm, 12" 10 mm, 19 1/4" 12mm, 30" 16mm 53 1/4" 20mm. I place the reel low on my rods 17" up from the butt. As far as the hatteras guys, HA, Let them dwell in the 80's. 75mm or bigger? you might as well put on one guide and a tiptop. With big guides your not shooting the line straight, it's just floppin around in the breeze & scrubbing off distance. I'd like to take a trip there & see what they would have to say about my rod...
Happy twisting
