I dont know what rod would be good for it. I will be using it for stripers and blackfish. Would graphite be the best? Also I will be using braided line. Will braided line eat through the guides?

off the rack..I like composites over 100%graphites...For blackfish A Calstar GF or GFX700L.Great all around rod..The GF700XLH also great but has a faster tip..
Seeker eastcoast the best value out their..Good action for bottom fishing..

Graphite ;StCroix for an off the rack rod you cant beat it.

Custom
...Gusa I think is the best composite or graphite blank out...The PURC70mh for blackfish or a Mega for stripers...Once
you fish the GUSA you dont want to fish anything else..
.....
Custom Calstar GF700HLH works great for both.I have built a few & they fish it both for Blackfish & Stripers..

Seeker CWS709 composite blank faster taper than a calstar & great action for both types of fishing...

I've got the Tekota 600 on a Rogue SWE 665C, with 40lb power pro. The braid has not yet eatten through the forecast guides, this setup is also great for ocean fluking and bass. I've not yet used this for blackfishing but I assume it should be good. This might be a little over your budget but I think its a great rod thats worth it, and should be a good choice for your uses. Good luck! :)

Harold - I feel that there are two very fine choices to evaluate in your price range. Lower than your price range, actually.

First - Contact my friend Capt. Neil, my fellow moderator here on Noreast and set up a visit to his "shop" to look at his "Long Islander Series" M and MH models. I think you will be more than impressed with the quality, for the modest money Neil charges.

I would be willing to bet you a nice cup of Dunkin' Donuts coffee that you leave there with at least one of Neil's creations. They are that nice.

The other real good option to evaluate would be to take a look at the Lamiglas BL6630 and 7030 sticks, as Nikoli has already suggested. I've repeatedly gone on record with my feeling that the Lami 7030 is THE finest factory-built rod currently on the market for bunker dunking and chunking bass.

Additionally, one of the best toggers I know, ONLY uses his own home-wrapped version of the Lami 7030 (blank #CGBT841M) for himself. Since he spends his entire Summer not fishing, but rather hunting for new tog drops to fish in the Fall, I tend to give his opinions more credence than most others. That dude is one serious tog hound.

Now if you want to up your dollar amount, then there are all sorts of nice custom sticks that can be constructed on all kinds of different blanks. The options are dizzying, really. Seeker, Calstar, Loomis, Lami, St. Croix - all make many terrific choices in blanks that could be built in most excellent bass/tog sticks.

But for the money you want to spend, you CANNOT go wrong with Capt. Neil's LIS rods, or that smokin' factory-wrapped Lami BL6630/7030.

Come back and let us know what you do finally purchase.

best, Lep

I am looking to spend around $180.00 for a nice rod.

Capt Richi. I will look into those rods. Yea I want one that would be good for Stripers and Blackfish. Thanks Guys..

Seeker Blue Lighting BCBW7097T..Seeker makes a great rod.. or East Coast BA857c or 807C..

BCBW7097T.... I build this rod as a custom but cant match the factory price...I just built one for savvy & have three more orders in for blackfish rods..It would make a good striper rod too..
They are american made top quality rods..
I think they come with EVA or cork grips..For around 200 you cant beat it..

Lamiglas good rods & american made..Buy the best quality rod you can..

Wow!! Guys I am new on this board and did not realize how many people are willing to give there input. I really appreciate it. I really did not even think anyone would even respond to my question. This Board ROCKS!!!!

I guess I got impatient because I am going fishing tommorrow and actually ended up at the local shop and picked up a Lamiglas BL 6640. It was the only Lamiglas rod they had. I hope this one is decent because its not the BL 6630. Whats the difference between the two of them? Will this rod be ok?

Harold - glad you liked the quick help. This board is all about the new guy looking for a home somewhere on the www in which to come share and maybe learn a bit. We don't do cliques or poke at newbies here - plenty of other sites for that.

As far as the difference between the 7040 and the 7030 - well, a few seasons back there wasn't a 7040. What happened was that Lami released a slightly lighter action blank and named the rod they factory built on it the 7030. The OLD, stouter 7030 was moved up in the Lami line and became what we now know as the 7040.

Confused? I hope not. What you bought is a fine tog stick - though its a little bit stiffer than the "new" 7030, which many consider a gold standard in tog rods.

You still have a great rod there, though . . .

Thanks Lep. I actually bought the BL6640 not the BL7040. Is it the same thinking and process as you described? So my rod is stiffer than the BL6630? The guy at the shop said it was a "Heavy rod" do you think he should have said "extra heavy"?

Also I will be using it for Striped Bass as well. You think its too stiff?

All very subjective questions. To me, its too much rod for the fishing I do and to my taste. But that might not be the case for you. For example, if you fish the eastern end of Long Island, maybe drifting bucktails in the Gut, or for tog north of Little Gull Island in that screaming tide up there, then your new 6640 would be very appropriate.

If it were I, probably I would consider a swap to the 6630/7030 - again, based on the type of fishing I do.

Despite what I've written, I do not own a Lami BL series. I happen to prefer Calstar blanks and so have custom versions of the 700XLH, L and ML - all of which see heavy useage during bass and tog seasons. But they were substantially more moolah than Lami charges for their factory rods.
