I think that is the best idea the dec ever had.Why do we need live fish if we are going to eat it when we get back to the dock and the blackfish season is in cold weather so the meat spoiling without ice is not a problem. This will root out the recs who sell their catch.

WTF...
NJ's tog season starts in Nov...I would say more than 50% of rec boaters are out of the water by than and there isn't that many black fish boats in NJ after Dec. Who is doing all the rec tog fishing?

The think the DEC answer will be to ban live fish for recs.

think so?

That's what my sources tell me! Only licence holders will be permited to keep hem alive. It will also help with problem of use of undersized ones for bait.

Personally I never tried it but a few old timers around these parts say they are the best. I also found an old fishing book once that someone donated to a school that I worked at and sure enough one of the top rated bais was Tautog. If I remember the book was circa 1920 or so. I wish I took that copy because it had alot of great info and insight. It also said Sea Robins for Bass too.

That's fine by me, but there needs to be some sort of required method. I personally like to bleed out my catch by cutting their gills or in the case of tog, their throat and putting them in the livewell for a while to completely bleed them out. Just like some people have gotten summonsed for sundials as short fluke, I'd hate to get a ticket for "keeping live fish" when their throats or gills had been cut.

All sounds good, but I wouldn't trust the DEC on the water to know which end of the tog is the throat and which end is the ass.

TOTAL OUTRIGHT BULL...............there is no way in **** the legitimate commercial fishermen should be swept to the curb over this.I also have a hard job with the guy from the GSSA saying we will take a reduction......BS... in NY we only get 25 fish, per day,per boat,1 trip.I want no part of any reduction, comms only get 10% of the quota!!Hard enough to make it now...Go take it from somebody else, ours are documented, they know what we catch. If they can't enforce it tough **** do your job.I do mine,i research markets, question buyers and do everything else a person in business seeking max profit does!!Don't most businessmen want to obtain max profit for their product.I ain't no rich guy, almost to the point of barley scraping by.But Jesus Christ i operate like any other business man trying to get the most bang for my buck.Although they have me operating at day laborers wages. It did'nt come easy either.I have worked hard developing markets and do business with only legitimate fish buyers.I do it 100% legal,to get kicked in the balls on togs while we only get 10%.Is insane!!ADDRESS THE PROBLEM......Illegal sale of live togs!Stop it if you don't have a commercial permit arrest them. From my stand point the live tog trade is great, prices higher than dead. Also dead prices higher than normal because of the live fish trade.Premium product.I have shipped many of dead togs to the city years ago only to return .50 cents,if you were lucky 75 cents.Since the live fish market evolved prices for dead have also increased.Stop the live fish market and the dead market will also fall on it's face.I suspect you will be lucky to get a $1 a pound.I agree something really has to be done with the illegal trade, but it should not come out of my pocket.Tags maybe the answer, but just another pain in the ass for the legitimate fishermen.I guess if it would stop the poaching problem it maybe worth it.Like most i'm not sure what the answer is here but i'm really gettin tired of getting slapped in the head from piss poor managment and piss poor science.I do my job why can't they...

rather put you out of business, than to have to do their job as enforcers of the laws. Pathetic.

Thats right......But how can inability to enforce a law be the rationale for banning, denying access to the law abiding fishermen?

Thats exactly what they did here with cod in the so called CCZ, except in our case they shut off access to everyone who was obeying the laws...leaving only the lawbreakers to fish.......Now all the folks who have worked hard, did their jobs, obeyed the laws, are going to get it right in the can, just because the regulators are unwilling to enforce the laws they created./....wtf?

It's the same old story...the same old song and dance... my friends.....

If me or anyone else goes on a boat and keeps Legal fish alive then sell them to make thier fare back and a little money, we have every right. You do what you do and we will do what we do.

The thing is that when they are sold they actually become dinner, vs people going every week and catching 10 fish to "Fill The Freezer"
and thats ok right? Then 30% of those fish get thrown out because the freezer is full and the wife needs to put food away. Then another 30% gets thrown out because they get freezer burn, and so on.

See IMO the real problem is the private boats that poach and the Fish Potters, and the lobster guys who really put a hurting on stocks.

FYI Lobster is the true crack for Togs...
