No, but not surprised. Probably will cut back access and enforcement too.

Gotta love New York State.

Best recreational deal from the state for the money !!!

When you look at what $ 40.00 gets you around the state parks this is a bargain. $ 40.00 = One round at Bethpage Black Course, site of the US Open. Bad news, it takes 5 hours to play. Good News, most golfers would never get a chance to play any other US Open course. $ 50.00 = One Adult all day ski lift pass at Gore Mountain NY. Bad News, this is a one day pass not a years access. Take your family of four for a weekend skiing and your talking almost $ 200.00 in lift tickets. I'm sure a season pass at Gore runs over $ 300.00 a year per person and it takes a tank of gas and 5 hours driving time to get there. You cannot even buy a season golf pass to Bethpage and it takes a lot of hard work to get a tee time. I think the 4x4 fishing permit is one of the best not so secrect deals in NY. Think of how many people live in the state and would never even consider getting a beach fishing permit. There are 15 million people in the NYC\Long Island area. Lets be thankful most of the yuppies would prefer to Jam the LIE on Fridays, bypass the central south shore and go to the hamptons. This does not include all the people in central and northern NY in towns\cities Westchester, Albany, Rochester, Buffalo, etc. The 4x4 pass is a sweet deal. Lets just not let the state know.

I'm with SurfaceStrike. Yeah, it's a pain to shell out all of that permit money every year. But most other forms of entertainment/recreation are much worse. To appreciate the value of a county or state beach permit, try taking the family to an Islander game some night. The "cheap" seats are $50. $6 to park. Forget about refreshments.
How about a concert ticket at Jones Beach? I could go on and on. In a relative sense, the beach permits are a decent value.

I dont know maybe its me but dont we live on an island this is some non sense that we have to pay for accsess to the water out of say 400 miles of beach we can only accsess about 40 miles of it and to do that you need 5 or six differant permits at a cost of close to a grand? we are limited due to birds and private property dont the people own the beaches . than or if there is a storm how come our tax dollars pay to repair private propertys like what happen out east when the hamptons got hammered and all the houses got washed away .they raise the fee for what the state dont clean the beach and they barly enforce the laws down on the sandwhen we get these yahoos running the dunes speeding and littering the beach all the fisherman pay the price for this.

price hike

I purchase my permit every year. I must have went fishing over 60 times last season after hours. I got asked for my permit maybe 5 times. I dont mind paying for the hike, but they should have people checking for the permit. It is not fare that we pay for the permit and others who dont still have the same access to the beach as we do. What do we do?

The state permit for $39 was a deal and at $49 it's still a deal. Forget not what others charge to fish in their neighborhoods? They could double the price and you'll still buy it. Nothing in life is free. My opinion would be to triple the price just to get rid of day trippers and party animals and enforce the existing rules already in place. It's still a bargain, shop around. I agree that raising the cost would keep out the casual crowd which would be good but as far as it being a great deal versus other forms of entertainment, you cannot compare this license to, say, tickets to a hockey game or a concert, without also taking into consideration the cost of your poles, tackle, bait and other gear.

Fishing can actually get quite expensive and raising fees for mere access to land is really just like raising any other tax and it has the same effect.

catchem, expensive? Ever play golf? Green fees, daily that is ranging 40 to $200 a round depending on the course and location or state. You can fish all year with a one time permit fee of $49 instead of paying that much per day hitting a golf ball around on some land already there? Fishing equipment? Same analogy, one club costs about the same as a custom built Lami and then you need a whole set besides. Nothing in life is free. Prospector

I agree golf is expensive as are most things we enjoy unfortunately. My main point was intended to be that this permit is really a fairly small percentage of my total annual cost of fishing and so it cannot be compared in isolation to other recreational activities. Of course, that also means if it rises 20% it has little impact.
