As of this evening, from the dock @ Star Island...

BIG MAKO: #241
BIGGEST SHARK: #298 Twesher
BIG BLUE: #262

There was also a #436 shark originally classified as a Tiger that was not eligible to qualify. Lots of speculation surrounding what exactly it was and why it did not qualify so I won't comment on it...

We landed 26 blue sharks to 200lbs today. Twenty six shark to the boat & released. Need #250 or better to qualify a blue.

Non stop action for us but not the right bite...

We got a total of 70 blue sharks released over the two days we fished the tourney, and saw a huge great white on day 1. The white came from the port side of the boat and cruised through the slick on top huge dorsal fin. Fish was close to 20 feet long, absolutely amazing to see.
Not one dogfish the entire time
. Just tons and tons of blue sharks, we did not see one blue fish offshore either.

Water temp in the morning was 63 up to 66.2 in the afternoon. The further South west you went the warmer water, and deeper you went no dog fish.

The tiger shark was DQ because it was 2 minutes late to the scale.

will post pics soon.

The 436lb Tiger was 15 minutes late, they went at it again with a 515lb Tiger from the same spot!!! 15 minutes late today because they hit a net or something in the water that got wrapped up in the props killing any chance to get in on time. I'm sure the boys on the Barbaric are belly up to the bar right about now!!

Big shark was that thresher from the first day.

First day for us was non stop bluesharks, up to about 8' or around 200-lbs we estimated. We grinded it out all day in the same area. Second day we fished a different spot, and had less blues but still kept us busy. We moved three times to try and get away from them, and find some new life, but they kept finding us. No makos, no threshers for us. Lot's of white sided dolphins the second day.

Anyone have any general ideas where the winning fish were taken? I'm going to assume you aren't going to find tiger sharks at the butterfish hole, and if you couldn't get back in time you weren't inside of 80 fathoms either.

But where did the majority of the critters come from?

We fished the tournament... Had 25 or so blue dogs on day one with nothing to show for the scale... Day 2 was a similar story with 20-25 blue dogs but we did manage to fish thru them and pull out a 125 mako. We weighed it in at 4:20 on Sat and was the first mako weighed up to that point. A few larger fish were weighed before the 5 PM. Saw alot of life out there. Porposes, tuna, and rather large basking shark swam up our slick and under the boat. It was entirely too large to be a white. All in all a fun tournament. And yes, shame on the guys with the net-marked, 3 day old tiger shark. I dont know them and I cant say whether theyre good fisherman or not but that tournament is a well oiled machine and its run very well. There's no excuse for cheating...

Pics to come shortly...

See you guys next year!

This is a very bold statement. And I will say with no facts to back any of it up.
The fact is the boat did not clear the jetty in time it was late by 2 min. And 2 min. late is disqualified. The only truth in your statement is that your "friend" assumed something with no basis other than what he ASS U ME D I always get a chuckle when some one hides behind a keyboard proclaiming someone else cheated just because the fish that person hung on the dock blew away the competition. It is very common to catch tiger sharks out in the deep if you know how to do it IE fish on the bottom and chum on the bottom. Back in the early 80`s I fished with my uncle in a few shark tournaments and we ran to the hudson canyon anchored up and caught a few big tigers the biggest was just shy of 1000# 982 to be accurate. Another person who used to do this a lot was a guy named Fred Kammerran from babylon or lyndenhurst. I believe the fish caught on his boat still holds the NY record at 1080 or so.

Maybe all the money in these tournaments could compromise YOUR ETHICS that does not mean they compromise every one else`s Remember that before you open your mouth or type some False accusations next time.

Star Island

We fished the tourney as well. Had a mess of bluesharks both days, just didnt get the bite we needed. Day 1 we ran to 40 fathoms and found similar swarms of bluesharks as most everyone else. Ended up rigging my new flyrod and toyed with a 70-80lber for a half hour before release. I need a wider arbor style reel for sure.

Day 2 we fished 25 miles south and had no bites til about 11am and the bluedogs came again. Plenty of bites just not the one we needed. We were thankful that we didnt have a single dogfish after hearing reports of plenty in the area.

It was great to see old friends and fish all the while. We have fished this tourney for about 10 years now and I cant remember better conditions over 2 days, water was warm and the sharks were there.

As for the Tiger shark fiasco.... All I will say is that on day 1 we came in the jetty on time and the boat in question was already lined up outside the scales.

I also fished the star island shark tourney this past weekend and would like to say that I also heard later on the dock that the fish was DQ'd due to the fact it was determined by the marine biologist that the fish was caught several day's earlier. I was at the weigh in when the fish was hung , but was much farthter back in crowd and not looking at the fish carefully. I wish I had been closer to see what was going on, but at that point it was just a big tiger without contrversy, so i did't even look at it up close. From my perspective I was wondering what took so long to weigh the fish. seemed like it took a long time to actually hear the weight called out. Those guy's that brought that fish in should have been removed from the roster and Disqualified from the tourney and future tourney's. The boat was in when we went by just after 6 and it was waiting in line to be weighed when we went past to dock without a fish to weigh(loads of blue dogs to 200lbs, but no fish to weigh in) So I dont see that boat being late. Those guy's were trying to steal the money as far as I am concerned. What a shame, it is a great tourney that we have fished for many years and now we are thinking twice about it.

That Tiger Shark that White Water Marine brought in was at the scales on time. We were there and as soon as they lifted that fish my friend turned to me and said? that fish is old?. There was a marine biologist and it was determined that the fish was not caught on Friday! Yes they are friends with the folks at Star Island.

The White Water Contender was not run by the people from White Water Marine. They loaned their boat to someone that was going to fish tourney in his own boat, but it was in an accident on the road, so they offered him theirs. Please do not think that was Team White Water Marine.

Also, "Themate," were you one of the two guys on the radio bitching and moaning all morning yesterday about this out by the Horns? Threatening to sink their boat? Guys have a lot to say with the anonymity of the VHF or the internet. . . But no one was in the guys face when they were standing there next to the boat at the awards dinner last night.

I can see why Star Island didn't DQ them from the entire contest. Because they can't prove without a doubt that the fish was bought, or three days old. They did the right thing in eliminating the suspect fish, but without hard proof (forensic science?) they probably didn't feel it was right to ban them entirely.

BTW SQUIDDY you are the same guy who accused B turnbull of cheating and the video tape they had catching thier fish still couldnt make you believe it was possible:rolleyes:

Whatever you say bro. Im confident with my sources (all 15 of them) on this one. The whole turnbull incident was me saying what was being said "around the dock", just like I wrote in my post ;)

Im just glad to see it wasnt the actual Whitewater Boys running the boat.

suggestion

I too fished the tourney. I saw the fish hanging for about one minute. I heard the weight called out and walked away, but didnt pay much attention to the fish itself. My suggestion is , if the boat is called late, then dont weigh the fish. I wasnt able to stick around for the awards dinner, was any official explanation given that can end all the controversy. I've heard more theroies in the past day from the boat being late, the fish being days old, the fish was hit with a bang stick, the fish was a white shark. All that being said, I had a great time and a lot of fun and will continue to fish the tourney.

EXACTLY INTERNET RUMORS AND DOCK LIES!!!!
That is how it all starts.

You believe what is said "around the docks" not taking in to account the possibility it is all BS...and then you go and repete it.
I`ll second Hunt and Fish where was all of this at the awards dinner?
Look at what reelman "heard" on the "dock" so what story should we go with? Not a Tiger?,,Bangstick?,,Fish days old?,, Or that they were late?,, I pick that they were late because guess what, they were late.

I wasn't in the tournament and don't know exactly what the rules are, but coming right from one of the guys on the boat, they said that they were back to the dock on time, waiting in line to weigh the fish, but they did not call it in to the comittee boat. So the offical time it was weighed was 6:02. He has the printed weigh ticket and THAT and THAT ALONE is why the fish was disqualified.

Also, for all the people accusing them of cheating, what about the one they caught on Saturday that weighed even more than Friday's fish?? They were a half hour late with that one because they picked up a rope in the props on the way home. Does everyone think that they cheated with that fish too??? If they did "buy" a fish or whatever you guys think they did, why would they wait until the very last minute to bring it in??....especially after being late on the first day, don't you think they would have made it a point not to do that again on the second day??

Any just for the record, all the guys on that boat have fished A LOT of tournaments from Oak Bluff to Star Island to SMT offshore invitational, etc etc. They are not stupid enough to bring in a 3 day old fish in a borrowed boat with sponsorship's all down the side, and try to pass it off as being caught that day!

We're talking about experienced guys here not rookies, which is why they had White Water's boat!!

Wow, I was there and have heard about 4 different stories regarding the Tiger Shark. I'd sure like to hear the final verdict.

Anyway, I was aboard the "Bluefin" from Clinton, CT. We caught the 3rd place largest Mako, 222lbs.. Capt. Mike Marro did a spectacular job putting us on the fish and thinking outside of the box. Overall I had a great time and can't wait until next year.
