I have an older St. Croix rod given to me as a gift 15 yrs ago.8ft.model 8901 rated 10-20.I use it plugging with a shimano custom x 4000sx reel.Do you think a stradic 5000 would be better for this rod or too heavy.Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks

Captaintrips,
I personally think the 5000 is overkill for a rod of that size. I would go ahead and put a nice stradic 4000 that would fit it a lot nicer and make the combo a lot lighter amd more fun to use. By the way the stradic is an awesome reel. I own three 4000s a 2000 and 2 5000s.These reels are built solid never had a promblem with anyone of them. Very smooth drag and a lot of stopping power for their size.Hope this helps. Chris

I use the stradic 5000, on my 10' st croix. I am sure that it would go great on yoiur rod, however, I think that I would agree with lighttackleman. I think that a 4000 might suit you better.

You might want to think about going to sports authority, they have the reels where you can see and hold them, that way you can get a better idea of how big they are and how much they weigh.

Stadic

Stradic 4000 would be a better choice. I'd go to a tackle store though & bring your rod. They'll be happy to help & as good a price. Yest. @ the boat show in Brentwood, J&H tackle in Oakdale had the 5000 for $100. Mr. B's in Patchogue orJ&J in Patch. I know would help you also. I have a 4000 on a 8', a 5000 on a 10'. I also have a 4000 that I fished out of the bay 3yrs. ago & it still works fine. Tight lines & loose, high performance women & God Bless.
