does anybody know of a good connector to splice coax connectors. to make a long story short the coax wore through on a chafe point along the cabin for my differential antenna and was wondering if theres a connector to plice it back or is removing all of the coax the only way to go ?

There is a splice connector I had once for my vhf antenna but I don't know the number.I got it at west marine. You cut out the damaged section, put a male connector on each end of the wire and then put the double ended female between them.

Avoid the splice, if you can

Mr. Attitude has the correct, and easiest suggestion, if you don't want to fully replace the cable run.

Splicing coaxial can (and will) result in uncreased impedance, and you may experience signal loss from the antenna, (at least that's what they told me in EE school)

good advice aviod the splice

Bab,
There is a fairly good splice which can be crimp on and is sold in most marine stores.
If the splice is going to be exposed to the elements forget it! Inside you can get away with it. However I only used them on VHF radios.
I believe on my Northstar the cables couldn't be cut and one of the antennias had to remain a certain length you might want to also check on that.

do yourself a favor and replace the whole cable i work with coax everyday and the splice wont last that long with the salt air and weather around it if you are gonna splice it invest in some 3m rubberized electrical coating this will help in keeping the connection corrosion free for a bit but if its not to much of a pain change the whole cable you dont wanna be out there and not be heard you will not see a difference in the way it transmits or receives signal if you do splice it

coax splice

I have used them without failure for several years. Shakesphere make the best one I have seen. Thet are easy to install and do not fail. About 6 bucks a connector. They use o-rings at each end for water tightness and a small plastic cup inside to insulate the shielded wire from the center contact wire
Assemble with a dab of dialectic grease and they will last forever.
