Okay
I got this extra Lami GBT841XH.
I'm thinking a 1 foot extension
4 or five high frame Fuji sic spinning surf guides

Match with one of these reels
VS 400
VS300
Stella 1600
Penn 9500SS
filled with 65lb Power Pro

I see my self flinging 10 to 12 OZ jigs spining style down at the Bank.

Ok fellas am I nuts or should I start wrapping.

sam843,
never really was a fan of spinning rods for bottom fishing. I feel a convential rod gives you more control over a fish and convential reels have better drags. with an convential outfit it makes it a lot easier to bottom fish with. But what ever your decision is those are some nice reels you mentioned im sure you can put them to good use. Good Luck chris

Hi,

I have recently built a sailfish spin rod that the customer will use a 9500 SS. I understand this heavy reel has beefed up drag system to handle big fish.

Far be it from me to tell someone not to try something. I have tried some duzzies. If you have the time and $$ go for it and let us know how you made out.

In FL, don't folks deep jig grouper with spinners? This is actually what Stellas were originally designed for in Japan.

Using lighter tackle than you are talking about. I'd get a spinner designed for braided line, and use a much lighter jig.

BTW, a 9500 has an International (16S?) drag washer under the spool. Yes, it adds more drag, but the rest of the reel is not built any tougher than any other Penn SS, so guess what will happen.....

Hi,

I think you may have problems with deep water. I am not sure but I would bet it will take you more time to reach bottom. Sometimes I see a few people using spinning gear but never the regulars for cod.
My $.02

Capt Marc,

Very valid point!

Over the years I have seen too many show up with spin rods for blackfish, deepwater, heavy lead and wimpy rods. Most times they would not take the offer of a stout boat rod. They lost the most fish and lost the most rigs. And then you get a good fisherman that can use that kind of tackle and gives us a lesson.

Jigging cod requires torque, something that spinning reels don't have. Sailfishing is a finnese sport, unlike cod fishing, and spinning rods are conducive to throwing a live pilchard or ballyhoo when need be. I have seen people bottom fish with spinning rods, but I wouldn't want to be reeling up 12 or 16 ounces jigs on one. Just my $.02.

Good point also. I just can't imagine all that force being applied to the bail system using a 20oz jig. It's probably better then a hand line but that's about the extent of it.

I would build a nice 8' cod rod and match it with a penn senator, newell or progear.

Yea
The weak link is the reel
as Captain Mark said the bail.
The only manual bail reel that might take the abuse the van Staal 400
but at $1800 I don't think so.
I was looking to experiment but I guess not.
I already have 3 8 foot cod sticks built on the GBT841XH and a 4th which I just finished building that I named "Frankenstein".
It's 8 1/2 footer
I built it from a surf rod I built from a GSB1502MH blank.
I crushed the butt in a car door
The rod is a 2 piece rod so I epoxyed the 2 pieces at the ferrule and cut it back from the crushed butt 4 feet.
Man what a bat this thing can Fling 20 OZ Crippled herrings like they were A27s and light as a feather.
Can't wait to try it on Joeys boat this spring in Hyannis or the Bunny Clark.
I am thinking of getting a Trnidad 40 or an avet lx 4.1 to put on it.
Fellas thanks for the input on the spinning thing.
