My boys 8 and 10 prefer to use spinning reels to conventional(Less backlashes for me)I have a 7ft St Croix Med/heavy action and a Fenwick sehawk both good to 30lb test. I was looking for a reel I could get 2 spools for, one with 20lb for fluking and one for 30 lb for Jigging Bass and Blues. They don't do bad fluking with conventionals but Jigging forget it. I was looking athe Penn 7500ss, but I think 30lb might be a bit much. Any suggestions?

Forget Van Stall, too expensive

Have you considered the Shimano baitrunner? They have the freespool switch that makes fishing with bait easier. It might work for jigging too. Its good quality and much less than a VS. The Baitrunner 4500 is a BIG reel and would easily handle 30 lb test. I think even the 3500 might work with 30 lb. It would definately work if you went to a small diameter braided line.

A Shimano Stradic might be what you're looking for... I've had not a single problem with it - caught some big fish on it, too (I have the 6000). It also comes with a free spare spool. Between all my spinning reels (which include Penn, Shimano, Daiwa and [ugh] Quantum), the Stradic is my favorite and most dependable.

Penn live-liner

I'd check out the Penn live-liners.. Solid 6 ball bearing free spooling spinning reel. Fit's nice in your hand and is really a dream - perfect for 20 lb stuff, a little light for 30, but it's a Penn and I'm sure would handle it happily. As with every Penn sold, it has a parts list and getting an extra spool I'm sure is no-problem.

spinning reel

You need a spinner that is one strong, good drag, good line capacity and bait runner feature for live lining,chunking,etc..

shimano Baitrunner to weak stem flexs under stress

I suggest the Shimano thunnus 12000
cost max $229.00 less if you shop
has everything above but 100% alum.,bait runner.smooth drag etc..

I have 4 16000,12000

I have the Penn 560 Slammer. I bought a second spool for it from Penn directly. One is spooled with 20 and the other has 30. Plenty of power to handle any bass. I use it on my 11 foot surf stick.

For less money, you could go with one of the SS or Z series reels. The 7500SS is a big reel and really overkill. The 5500 would probably fit the bill nicely for you.

I have to agree with jtzannes. For smoothness, weight, and price. Shimano stradic. Maybe the way to go. As for durability nothing will beat a Penn. Fill it up with sand and never rinse it and they more often than not keep woking, business as usuall. May be more kid friendly, less moving parts to worry about. But you will sacrifice weight and smoothness....

Also spare penn parts are a dime a dozen....

Would you guess I am a Shimano guy....
