Jamie(fishordie) posted it on the other site.
I really admire his determination and love for fishing.
I hope I can fish with him, wahoodad and other great fishermen on the 10 day Wahoodad charter in Nov. I am on the waiting list on the trip.

The alternative to this is to use a harness. I am curious, if you use a harness for a spinner, what kind do you use. Kidney, shoulder or ??? On some of my spinners, I have rod rings installed on them. I need a harness system to match. What do you recommend?

What do you recommend?Steve (fathom) used a harness for his spinner when he landed a 144 lbs yft on the recent Big E trip. I think he used rod rings. He was lifted twice while fighting the fish.

He used a standard standup harness, I dont remember if he had rod rings or not. TJ (minnow on 360tuna) used a modified strap and a stand up harness. The rod rings seem to be the way to go if you have an aluminum reel seat, and the rod was built for the pressure the rod rings can exsert.

Thanks Doug. I have the Smithy Spyder harness that I use for my conventional rods but a spinner set up may need a different angle for the straps. I need to try it out in the garage tonight. The spinning rods that I have with the rod rings are the OTI 7.5 80# popping rod and OTI 5' (cut) 80# jigging rod. Both have Aftco alluminum reelseats with the rod rings.

Thanks Kil. They say a picture is worth a thousands words. Looks as I suspected that there is very little help from that type of harness with a spinner outfit. A shoulder type harness would give more lift. Also looks like the pad can be lowered too.
But, ohhhhhhhhhhh the aching back!

Spinner support

Fishordie built this prototype for his own use\research\pleasure.
as he posted "once again I travel into another dimension to boldly go where no man has gone before. Yeah I know crazy but sometimes you just have to say why not."

Also posted wheight about 160z.

As far as rod loops I built a home made set and installed a just ahead of the for grip. All felt well with sholder harness.
But when trial casting the line off the spool would actually
pass over the top of the blank and catch on the loop. I never considered this. So off they came.

Nothing wrong with trying an idea of your own. just not all work out.

What I learned is a spinner reel loop if installed needs to be behind the spool by the seat..

Hi Kev. Thanks. The rod rings are installed on an aftco reel seat. It fits between the two locking rings and the seat is installed as a downlocking so the rings are precisely just back of the reels spool. I tried the Smithy spyder harness last night and it worked fine as long as the pad is placed over my thighs rather than higher up. It looks like the rail got in the way of the angler in the photo that Kil posted and he had to raise the position of the rod butt higher up into his stomach area to clear the rail.

By the time Steve got some one to get him a harness he was already wore out. Also when some one puts a harness on you , they never put it where you want it. If you look closely you will see that he has the rod resting on the arm of the cleat and is using it as you would a rail except the reel is forward of the rail. There was not much of a torque arm when using it that way, but it was better than nothing.
