Tightly wind on spectra is very important especially fighting a big fish like tuna. I learned the valuable lesson after I lost big tuna becuase the fighing line dig into the lines on the reel. If you let the tackle shop wind the spectra line, you have to ask them to wind tightly. I usually use extra reel to wind the line on it first, then with a click on, or slight drag I rewind on the original reel. Also I read that to wind tightly, you release all the line while the boat runs at 6 - 8 knot and wind back the line on a reel.

I made a spool holder out of plywood
and and use 2 pieces of 1/4" poly urethane in between the 2 pieces of
plywood to act as drag material, when I put a spool of line on. I use 5/8" and 1/2" threaded rod covered with pvc pipe to protect the spool when turning.
I mounted the cradle to my wook bench
and it is fully adjustable to handle
any size spool. not only do you have to pool specta tight but you have to
criss cross the line back and forth
very quickly, this will insure that the line has a better chance of not digging in on a heavy drag. I do not recommend letting all your line out the back of a boat to reel it back in to make it tight. you can't beleave the drag on that much line being out.I sold a Shimano TTS 80w to a guy who did just that. he let out all the line and when the drag setting could not handle the weight he cranked up the drag to full and in the process spread the spool an 1/8 of an inch wider, causing the reel to become useless.
when we took the line off the spool you could see the marks that the line left in the spool. mono needs to be tight but not that tight.

Spectra

Most shops don't put it on tight enough for tuna. Not all machines can handle it.

To do it by hand I usually put a towel on the floor, screw driver though the spool and use my feet to apply the pressure by stepping down on the screw driver. Do lots of cross wrapping to prevent digging in.

Watch that the line isn't rubbing against the rod.

Use a quality Spectra and it'll last for 10 years.
