Has anyone seen any spearing at the local docks? Also, is there any specific technique to freezing them, or I just throw them in the freezer in a zip lock till may? Thanks for any help.

Johnb5, all fish you catch that we be frozen and kept for future use as bait should be put into a very cold solution of salt water and ice as you catch them. This will keep the baits in good shape, nice and firm when you go to use them in the future. When I refer to saltwater, I don’t just mean sea water. Mix Kosher Salt in with the seawater. As a gauge, I use approx. 2 large boxes of Kosher Salt in a 162 Qt. Igloo cooler, ½ filled with water, and plenty of ice. Adjust accordingly to your cooler size. Don't be skimpy with the salt, you won't oversalt them.

That's true, SKATEMASTER........it is a famous old New England recipe called *whitebait*. It consisted of spearing, sand eels, and juvenile game fish.

Fresh caught, you put them in flour and panfry them. I've tried it, and it is excellent!

Matter of fact, I'm not ashamed to mention, while seining them, I ain't above popping a couple in my mouth, LOL, they taste pretty good! :)

Add the MAGIC!!!>>>

Makomatt hit the nail on the head but there is one key missing which many guys use to preseve the bait to its finest! use 1 quart of clear cornsyrup to each 5 gal. pail of salt water brine. This will coat the bait against frezzer burn and it washes right off with out a scent left behind! Try it you'll like it:)

Bait and Water

It is NOT a good idea to put your fresh caught live bait into a Brine solution or any type of water if you intend to freeze or refrigerate them.

If you allow the bait to die while in water, the bait will die with its mouth open, making it almost useless as hook bait.

Let the bait expire first in a empty pail, then put the fish into a brine solution for chilling.
This is the way bait is handled by commercial fishing crews.
