The single fish was around 700#s, and the two fish were between around 450# apiece. Out of the 16 we landed this fall the fish averaged around 450, but had a few into the high 600s and one Mac-Daddy at 780#.

Rampage,

We were drifting dead baits. The Giant fishery in the North East is from Maine to Nantucket. The fish then migrate down to North Carolina in Novemeber and are there through January. The three fish pictured were taken off the Nantucket area this fall.

In last two years, in the fall, we trolled, but the troll bite was nil this year. In the spring, and summer, large squid spreader bars work well. In the fall we prefer to pull baits or drift dead baits.

The NC winter bite is also a combination of trolling and drifting. We're goin down there within the next few days. Season opens on December 1 with a fresh quota. Howie

Live Bait

Matt,

The best way to fish live bait like herring or bluefish is to bridle them through the eye sockets. You cannot use a mousetrap because you must slit the fish in the back, right behind the head. This for sure will kill the fish.

We didn't have a problem with dead baits, but they must be rigged properly to look alive. If you need to know how to do this, I will explain....Howie

Same as us

The bag limits for Bluefin are the same as here in the Ny bight.

Current Atlantic Tunas Recreational Baglimits
The current recreational daily bluefin tuna retention limit is ONE fish per vessel, measuring 47 to less than 73 inches curved fork length. (Subsequent changes to the daily retention limit will be announced on this web site. Angling category vessels in all areas are also allowed one large medium or giant "trophy" bluefin (measuring 73 inches curved fork length or greater) per vessel per fishing year. All bluefin must be reported by calling (888) 872-8862, visiting the www.nmfspermits.com website, or in Maryland and North Carolina, to the nearest reporting station. For North Carolina reporting station locations, call 1-800-338-7804; for Maryland reporting station locations, call (410) 213-1531. The Angling category yellowfin tuna daily retention limit is 3 yellowfin/person. The minimum size for yellowfin and bigeye tuna is 27" curved fork length.

My boat is on the way down to North Carolina right now. I'll meet up with them once they settled in.

The season opened up on December 1, and as it stands now, the commercial quota was set at a little over 60 tons or until December 31, which ever comes first. There is talk, and pressure from the NC boys, of putting the 250 tons of unused quota from the 2001 season that was never used into this year's quota, and extending the season through January. We, of coarse, hope this happens......The season is not over. It has just begun. You just have to be in the right place. Howie

Yes Brian,

Youv got that right. Andy Mauntner is one of the best fisherman + captain that I've had the pleasure to fish with. He handled my boat beautifully, he's courageous, and knows a lot about big fish. And he's also a pleasure to be with...I met him through his brother Ryan, who I became close with out at Montauk...And I must say that Ryan is also in the "Big League" of big game. I have much to learn from both those guys, and trust them with my beloved boat. And I also promised to keep some of there secrets between me and them. But I do like to post on this board, and they have nothing to worry about. I too know how to keep a secret....Howie
