Hello Every One,

Looking at purchasing a Southshore 30. I have no experience with them. It is powered by 330 Iveco. How do they compare with the 31 Duffy as far as Ride and Drift. The 31 Duffy is my Ideal choice but due to Slip Restrictions I cannot get it. I love the lines of the southshore just do not know much about them. Even with a Demo you can not always get the Ideal Weather Situations.

Thanks!

Does Flowers boat yard build up that hull?

I think the only difference right off the top is that the duffy 31 that atlantic builds is done without an engine box.

I rode the duffy and she rides buetifully.

good luck.

I have to be at exactly 30 loa. The Duffy is at 31'6" so it would not be allowed. I am going tomorrow to see Ken Flowers and to also see another one that is for sale in South Bristol, Maine. I like the lines of them, however, I hear the cabins are really low. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Went up to Walpole, Me the other day to see Ken Flowers. Great guy and a Great Crew! He was a wealth of knowledge. We began talking about the type of boat I wanted and before I could finish he knew exactly what I was looking for. I have an interest in the southshore 30 but after talking to him He said the thirty three would much better suit me and that he could cut it down to 30. It has a 12+ft beam which I don't know if it is too beamy for a 30ft boat. But I want the walkaround wheel house which can be found on one of one blitzens thread.

I also met with Chris Taylor in South Bristol who has a beautifull Shouthshore 30 for sale. Great guy nice boat. I may consider his boat as well, but I am waiting for a quote from Ken to see how much the new build will cost me. After seeing pictures of the 33 walk around that's the boat for me. My Vineyard yacht 29 was set up that way so I just have to have it.

33 walkaround

Medsun,

I rode a 33 walkaround that flowers built up and it was a really nice boat and a really nice ride. I was looking for a 30ish size boat as well but and started at the southshore, but since i'm tire of my engine box, Ken suggested i look at the 33. My problem is i need a 3' or less draft and the 33 is closer to 4.

I don't think you can go wrong working with ken and his crew.

Whoever you work with, i get the impression that if you go in with a detailed spec right from the begining, the process is much easier.

good luck.

Well I think I am close to a decission. I have been looking at DE boats for the past 6 years. I will be working with Ken on pricing his 30' Flowers a shortened version of his 33'. I am going to go with a walkaround design because it suits my fishing style and I love to have access to the bow. Nothing beats fighting a Giant from the Bow. The short list of options to include:

Walk around pilot house with sliding doors port and starboard.
425hp Volvo D9 with electronic controls.
Wynn Windows
Tackle station and Livewell Placed on the back side of pilot house.
V-berth
Stand up Head.
Standard Bus Heater
Salt and Freshwater Washdown
Stainless Bow Rail
And A BuTT Load of rod holders.

If everything goes right I'll start a new thread on The Build process.

I would think a 5.9 Cummins 425 hp would be an excellent choice for power in that boat, it weighs way less than the D9. They also make a 440 and 480 hp version of that engine if you want a race boat. The 5.9 will cost way less also. The Iveco 6.7 would be a nice engine as well. Good luck.

Edit: Did you mean a Volvo D6 (instead of D9) for power? They do not make anything less than 500hp in the D9.

Medsun,

Ask Ken the difference in price between the Wynn windows and the Diamond Sea Glaze windows. I started out asking for Wynn windows on my boat and then talked to alot of people and they all said at least one of their Wynn windows leaked. I upgraded to Diamond Sea Glaze and have had no leaks and am very happy with them. However I understand budgets, also ordering windows are down the line in the building process.

Actually the cummins was my first choice and it still a possibility. The do make a D9 with 425hp. The hull is actually a 33 footer cut down to 30ft. Ken and I were talking the other day about engines maybe I miss understood him. I do not know much about Iveco I am sure they are a good motor. I was on a south shore 30 with one in it and I could not believe how quiet it was, however lack of servicing dealers In my area is what makes me shy away. I will be looking hard at cummins as well because they are right down the street from me.
Thanks for the advice and keep it comming.

5.9 Cummins

The 5.9 Cummins puts out big power numbers and weighs 1,000 pounds less than the Volvo D9, and probably costs $5k-$10k less. That boat would fly with a 425-480hp 5.9 Cummins. For it's size and power output, the 5.9 Cummins is the best diesel engine built (in my opinion). I'm putting an 8.3 Cummins 500hp in my 34' Calvin. I bought my engine through Roger Kennedy, Kennedy Marine in Steuben, ME. Roger was excellent to work with, always had time to answer my questions, and had a very fair price. I would highly recommend Roger if you go with Cummins or Iveco.

I'm getting to the point of installing windows in my Duffy 35 project boat. ABOUT (approximately) should I anticipate spending for a set of Wynn cabin windows (4 on the forward windshield, 2 on each side and 3 across the aft cabin bulhead). How much more $$ are Diamonds?

Hi guys,

I will be talking to Ken sometime this week or possibly Tomorrow.
As far as engines go I am going with cummins 98% sure. I have always liked them and now that they also offer the electronic controls its a no brainer.
