I bought a cheapie surfcaster combo and got 2 big hits on my castmaster before the lightning hit. Any pointers on live bait on rigs? I thank you all for your input. I was fishing at the mouth of the nissequgue.

You got two on your kastmaster, now your loking to use bait?I don't understand.stick with you kastmaster,or maybe try a smaller 1 if they were hitting, obviosly they liked something about it.do your self a favor, & stick with it & stop switching so much, just try experimenting, with something similar,to what they were hitting.for ex.try a slower retrieve, stop & go,alittle faster, there's varios things you can try, don't just cast it out, reel it in,& expect to catch.

Also make sure the lure's hook is sharp. Almost always the hook on a lure out of the box needs sharpening. Sometimes I even replace the hook with a stronger, sharper hook like an Owner or Gamakatsu.

My 2 cents.....

I have 2 theories........

Theory # 1
If you were fishing just before the storm came in - you were fishing the very last of the outgoing - probably wasn't a lot of water in the river at that time - you snagged bottom & thought you had a hit.

Theory # 2
You had fish on - but - reacted too swiftly & pulled your lure out the fish's mouth.

Assuming it was # 2:
Next time don't react to the first tap. Count to 3 - then try to set the hook.
