Hi guys

I went to the Rockland show this past weekend and bought some worms and soft body baits from the worm lady. I was wondering if anybody can clue me in and tell me if I should wash them or clean them before I use them. They're covered with, what I'm guessing, an oil that is used in the molding process. The stuff stinks and I'm sure doesn't taste anything like what a striper, weakfish or fluke is used to eating.

Did I waste my money or will these soft plastics actually catch fish
?

Thanks for the help .............. Joe

I think what you're referring to is the scent oil, fish/bunker oil, used to attract the fish. I'm almost sure you should leave it on. Now that it's open if it's not a resealable pouch keep it in a plastic baggie or something to retain the oils. And it might be good to buy some bunker scent or one of those products to put in the bag to keep the plastics funky.

Thanks for the reply but no it's not fish/bunker oil. These baits are sold loose not packaged. They are in bucket and you take out how many you want put them in a plastic bag, same as a vegtable bag in the super market, bring them to the counter where the bag(s) are weighed and pay for them by the pound.

As a matter of fact to let all know how uneducated I am about these things, I mixed different color baits in the same bag and the lady told me to get more bags and seperate them or the colors would bleed into one another.

I actually bought these because they looked the same as the ones I used when on a charter last year for bass.

Fishnjoe, I know who you got them from, I wash them.
When fishing, you can put on a little scent or pour scent in a plastic bag and let them sit in there until you are ready to use them.

Some plastics do come with a factory-applied scent on them. Typically it smells like anise, but I guess that's not the case here or you would have mentioned it. There are also many other "flavors" that either don't smeel so great (to us) or don't have any discernable smell to a human at all. That might be the case here, but I can't know because I didn't get the opportunity to go to that show.

As has been mentioned, if you are of a mind to doubt what that moisture/lubricant actuallly is, you can cerainly wash them off in say a very mild hand soap, rinse super well and then apply whatever brand and scent of fish attracting oil you wish. Its all good.

But as DC says, try to avoid getting YOUR scent on those baits as much as possible. The trick with a soft bait is to encourage a fish to mouth it just a split scend longer than it would with a hard bait, thus increasing your chances of a solid hook-up. A worm that smells of you (or worse still, me!), I would think will probably not boost the odds in your favor.

best, Lep

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll wash them and keep them in a closed container with some, using the term from one from my youth, Kickapoo Joy Juice ( who remembers where that came from?
)

I'll try to limit the amount of handling and scent on them. I'll also report back during the year on my
or

In the mean time if anybody has any more info to add, please do so.

Joe

PS a hint for the above question on Kicapoo Joy Juice. It was "brewed" where Sadie Hawkins Day was a more important holiday then Christmas!

Leave it on

I too have bought pounds and pounds of soft plastics from ( THE WORM BAR) at the Rockland show.
Have caught hundreds of fish on them.:) Just keep em sealed tight and don't leave them in the boat or in your truck during hot summer days, they melt together very quickly:(

Thanks again guys. :) I appreciate that you took the time to answer, its comforting to know that some of you have actually used these worms purchased from the Worm Bar and had sucess. Thanks for the correction Chevy1, they say the mind is the second thing to go, I forget what the first is!

Lep - hope your recovery is going as planned.
