Just use slighly bigger chestertown type hooks than you would use for regular flounder fishing. Do you know where they will be fishing? I hope they aren't planning on fishing around Block Island as the RI flounder season doesn't open until April 26th.

Viking trip

You would need to use a flounder rig which is different from the commonly used high and low rig that you will be using for cod. They will probably have rigs on board that you can use or buy. You can PM them here on Noreast. Good luck and tight lines

SNOWSHOES

HI:
get the biggest Chesterton hook you can get. Tie one on teh leader of the other one(two hook rig) about 1/3 the way down towrads the actuall hook. That way BOTH hooks will in the Snowhoes face. HINT...HINT...HINT... I make my own by leadering my own hooks and make the leaders 16-18 inches long. That way the hooks will out along the bottom and ALOW the SNOWSHOE to come over and suck down your bait(skimmer clam belly and such) without feeling the sinker.

He might if he didn't know about it. He wouldn't be the first Montauk boat to get caught fishing for flounder off Block Island ot-of-season. Everybody makes mistakes.

Maybe 20 years ago. These days the "snowshoes" average about 1 1/2 - 2 lbs (not really snowshoes) and go up to 4 lbs. Regular flounder hooks will do. I personally prefer the smaller sproats.......;)

I use #8 sproats for flounder and the flounder inhales them, and its only a flounder, you need nothing stronger. The problem here is that he may not target flounder but cod as well, then the hooks are much too small. You need to have another rig ready for different fish, and play it by ear.

It Depends on how big the fish are, but when I fished in Quincy years ago I liked small Virginia Style Blackfish hooks in size 8 or 10. Small enough to fit in a flounders tiny mouth, but strong enough should you hook a small codfish.

Best bait is the ribbon part of the clam, and leave a long piece trailing. Big flounder perfer this presenatation. Same with Sandworms, don't be cheap...at least 1/2 and average sized sandworm with alot trailing.

With Curren blackfish regs what they are you may have to search for these. Years ago Mikes Tackle had em already snelled. The 8's were used for Fiddler fishing and the 10's were preferred by the Coney Island Pier Sharpies when Fishing Black Mussels for Tog in the spring. Many a fine spring blackfish was caught on the pier using Mussel...it was the first bait they hit.

We used to place two flounder hooks at the bottom of the cod rig. It was more of a bycatch then a target. When you would check your bait or reel in a cod the flounder was a bonus.
thanks i was thinking the samething

BLOCK ISLAND.....YOUWZA!!!

Hi:
Lots of luck on your trip. I wish I were going with you.
Make sure if you do buld that rig, Usea Glow or YELLOW bunch of beads in front of the hook. I love to put a 2 inch squid (plastic)above the hook. A curly tail will also work .
HINT...HINt...HINT...use a GULP for quick , fast results IF the current is slow.

I break for blackbacks

Do these qualify as snowshoes? Caught last year. 19.5" on the larger one.

I prefer the Mustad 4011E Virginia #10 but the #8 is better for larger flounder. Problem is that they don't make the smaller sized 4011E anymore. They start at #6 I think the #6 is too big for flounder.

http://www.mustad.no/products/classic/classic/class_4011.htm

Years ago I fished on a 6 pac south west of block and you will have a problem once the current is running with long leaders flapping in the current. The rig they told us to use that worked was this hook on a very short leader right near the sinker which was I think over 8 oz. Ribbed mussles was the choice bait. We would toss the rig a little up current and when it hit bottom under us we would leave a little slack in the line to allow the short leader to lay on bottom. Every now and then a slight lift to see if anyone was home. Big flounder was the norm. This was years ago so who knows what the prefered rig or area is now.

The 4011E is a good strong hook that can take a cod if you get lucky.

I've caught many flounder in my life but it was a real thrill to catch my first snowshoe. I couldn't get over the size of the thing.

We fished a charter out of Montauk about ten years ago and while it wasn't like the "old days" we fill several totes with giant flounder and market cod. All of the fish were caught with extremely large chestertown hooks. The biggest flounder hooks imaginable. I could be wrong but the shank on these appeard a bit shorter than the traditional chestertowns used for bay flounder fishing.

Even though my friends and I booked the charter to fish for cod by the end of the day there wasn't a guy among us that wasn't baiting up with fresh mussel baits to catch those fatties. With a good current running those beauties put up quite a tussel on medium weight tackle.

Good luck.

Thats true Mike, about other boats... but you know Steven knows the regs just about better than anyone, especially for RI, MA, and NY because we fish all those waters a lot.
