I read on another post about about a SNAFU rig for catching blackfish. Now I'm wondering what a SNAFU rig is and how to tie one.

Also, What is a Mike's Special Rod and how do you build one. I'm hearing from a few friends that the local wrecks are loading up with big blackfish and want to get ready.

EC - great posts. Keep them coming. Your posts on Alberto's "Blackfish" threads are priceless. Thanks.

SNAFU RIG>>>

TJL65...we opened up a can of worms with the snafu rig with everyone wondering what it looks like...well we will soon post pics on the way we hook a crab with a snafu rig. Like they say a picture is worth a thousand words...

I am glad you enjoyed the articles...we will give you more later on this fall and winter when we have some more time...i will also explain more on the Mike Special blanks within the next few days though.

snafu ...

ahh the good old snafu,, there are a few versions , ill share my favorite and the onre i think is easiest to tie..here goes.. if you snell your own rigs make a few alittle longer than usual say 10 inches instead of 8 inches
if you buy em snelled the shorter ones work just fine! ok, take 2 rigs hooks facing out(loops toward each other), spin the two lines together 3 or 4 times and pass the loop ends (not the hooks ) throught the center of the loops you have just made ,its the same concept as the dropper loop or blood knot..pull the loops through and hold both ends in your mouth as you pull the
hooks apart , the knot should sinch nicely...im gonna try and take pics to post ...will help

From Max's description it kinda sounds like a rig I tie up a lil different.
Not sure if its a SNAFU rig, but this is what I use to fish a larger whole crab:

Take a length of stiff mono about double the length you'd use for a single hook and snell a hook on each end. Fold in half and create a dropper loop in the middle. Attach the loop to your 3-way/swivel/line/etc as you would normally do with a single hook. I insert one hook into the left side of the crab, in one leg socket and out another(try to get it throught the furthest possible ones) and on the right side do the same but put the hook through the leg sockets in reverse order(top to bottom vs. bottom to top) Crack top shell with sinker and you're in business.

I prefer this rig when the big whitechins are around and not a really "Sticky" bottom as they have a higher tendency to snag after you miss a hit.
Of course I might be wrong in my understanding of a SNAFU rig and eagerly await the PROs' responses.

Great forum. Thanks again for the wealth of info you guys all provide!!!
