Just used some flex coat slow cure on a grip. Next mixed a batch for the reel seat after I rolled on some tape bushings. Same procedure each time (warmed bottles with warm tap water), same bottles of epoxy. The epoxy I mixed for the reel seat began to harden after about 7 minutes. Once it started to harden it was solid in about 2 minutes and while it was hardeneing before my eyes started to give off a white smoke. The reel seat turned as I aligned it with the spine of the rod and acted normally even when the epoxy in the cup had completely hardened. Anyone ever had this happen or know why it happened?

how warm did you get it i know the warmer you get it the faster it will set .i dont warm for the seats any more for that reason it cuts the setup time.is this the only batch you had a problem with ?if so they mite have mis labled a batch.try calling flex coat if so.

Try U40 Rod Bond...Long pot life..Great for grips & seat...

Thanks everyone. Not sure what to make of it. I will try U40, longer pot life for grips and seats sounds like a good idea.

maybe it was what you mixed it in, i rememeber when i first started building i mixed flex coat finish in a styrofoam cup....it dried in about 5 minutes

yes i have had it happen. it's due to having too much flex coat rod epoxy in a small container. the chemical reaction and curing after mixing is quicker due to the small container and the large volume of epoxy - say over 15 cc's.

resolution - prepare everything you need to do to the rod first - bushings, spined the blank if you want, scuff the blank and seat, locate the placement of the seat, have your epoxy application tool ready, etc. now, create an aluminum foil tray to spread out your epoxy onto. it should be fairly flat and a few inches wide in each direction. after mixing, pour epoxy onto that aluminum tray and apply. you will have much more application time now.

Flex Coat Epoxy

Yes I have had the same thing happen to Flex Coat 5 Minute Epoxy. I told my offsider to mix up some epoxy when we were gluing up handles and instead of mixing up the normal epoxy he used the 5 minute stuff. He said to me gee this epoxy gets hot by the time I went to use it, it had gone hard. It was mixed up in one of the small FC cups and it was that hot I couldn't hold the container and it was smoking a little but that was a 1/2oz mix. Just make sure you have the normal "Rod Builders Epoxy Glue" and not the "5 Minute Epoxy" ? I only use the FC 5 Minute Epoxy to glue on tips. The normal Rod Builders Epoxy does get hot but nothing like the 5 Minute stuff

I did mix a lot in the small cup and come to think of it never did that before. I will reduce my mixtures.
