My buddy just bought a new '07 last year, and drove it out to Montana and back and hasn't had an issue with it yet.
I have an '02, 2500 HD and it's treated me very well, despite some serious abuse on my part. The '02's (actually, 99's through '02 I believe) with the 6-liter engines all have a knock in them that is well documented and "harmless." I've got 162,000 on mine and have had relatively few problems with the motor.
I've had to redo both ball joints from off-roading and an accident. I've had a tie rod break after an accident, and replaced both just to be safe. Despite the manual saying to replace the tranny, transer and diff fluids every 100,000 miles, I did it every 50,000 and at 100,000 miles, after changing the fluids, the tranny didn't work, couldn't move it off the lift. Probably picked up a piece of debris from the new filter, and blew the pump I was told, so I replaced the whole tranny instead of spending almost as much to rebuild the pump and hope that was it. At about 150,000 miles, I blew the transfer case. The pump went bad, wore out, wore a hole in the case and dumped all the fluid. But to it's credit, it still got me back from Albany with no fluid, towing the duck boat.
I had one issue with the motor, that apparently there was a recall for, the NOK sensors in the engine valley, under the intake manifold, went bad. Apparently there was a problem with water pooling there and rotting out the sensors. So they had to be replaced, and the area needed a bead of sealant.
For the way that I abuse my truck, on the road and off, compared to any of my father's Ford vans that he baby's on the road, my truck is holding up much better. And from the looks of it so far, my buddy's new Silverado is going to do the same.
