I too am interested in these reels. I know that they're popular in Australia and New Zealand, particularly for surf fishing. If you do a web search for Australian reel manufacturers you'll probably come across a few modern sidewinders. I've never met anyone that fishes them, though, so if anyone out there has any info on them, tell us what's up!

SIDEWINDERS>>>>

Anthonyale...i was just talking to Togmaster last night about our next topic, and it was about sidewinders!!! These reels go back a long time in the Sheepshead Bay area, reaching back as far as the late 1800s. I need a couple of days to get some research. One fellow i know designed some of the finest Sidewinders every made, out of Delrin, a plastic, that is used for artifical joint replacement. It also turns out, that we have another fellow here who tweaked these reels (as much as you could do to a reel that has just a spool, shaft, crosspiece and knobs), to rotate as smoothly as our best baitcasters! Maybe Togmaster will start this off, takes some pics, and i will make the calls and then put it into print!
