I keep hearing about sick time. I have a friend that works for the state out here. He was in a frenzy to use all his sick time before he retired.

Maybe I was out of line, but I had a disagreement with him about it.
I said I thought it was pretty clear, that sick time was to cover your loses if you got sick.

His point was, then why do they let you save it up. I countered with in case you get a prolonged illness or injury.

I guess I am wondering, is it vacation or is it for being sick? He retired in april and had used all but 7 days of it. Guy was really sick those last couple of years lol.

Every organization has their own rules on sick-time. Some employers have a use it or lose it policy, so those people tend to use the time, sick or not. Other companies allow you to accrue the time because they would rather you not be out, so as an incentive to be at work they allow you to accrue the time and either take it as "terminal leave" prior to retirement or will pay you for the unused time.

There was actually a big article in Newsday about the school administrators and some of their salaries because they got paid their un-used sick time in addition to their salaries. It worked out to be tens of thousands of dollars.

At my company we get 10 "PTO" days which include both sick and personal time-off (hence the name "PTO). If we don't use them, we lose them.

Some civil service jobs have almost unlimited sick time (Police, Fire & Corrections departments typically) but you had better be sick if you take the time.

It really all depends.

I'll use every second. ;)
Paid time off is very different than sick leave IMO.

That is true for those that started their employment before the early 70's. I am not sure of the exact dates for Tier 1A and Tier 1B as they are known, but that has changed over time. The reason back then was simple, had they not done it, very few would have actually gone into the education field. The pay was pathetic. People made more pumpin' gas.

We have no sick time.. it's all "PTO" time they call it.. personal, sick, vacation, etc. I get 7 weeks. Only allowed to carry over 1 week.. or lose the rest.... I'll use it all.. no problem.

You are correct...........it is intended for when or if you get a serious illness.:rolleyes: But, at least here in CT with state government, if you only use it when your sick.........they have a chart they use for days taken on different occassions....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: If you use, lets say only one day here ands there, when your really sick it will actually put you into a "Bad rating" category. In other words.......the days taken need to be more than the occassions.......
:rolleyes:......then you will be in good standing......:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Now, for retirement purposes, whatever sick time you have accumulated, you can only use a max of 60 days, the rest you use or lose.:rolleyes::rolleyes: So what most people do that are getting ready to retire is they start getting check ups and dr appt's and start burning some of it up.
Even then, most of them will never use whats been accumulated:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: For example, after my 60 days, I have 164 days left over............no way I'll be able to burn that in 2 1/2 yrs....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:....especially since we earn a day a month.:rolleyes:
So when you look at it in dollars and cents..........when I retire, they will be saving over $48,000 in my sick leave give back

And thats just from me, and there are lots of state guys that have way more sick time saved up than I do.........:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Now, vacation time accumulated can be used towards retirement also, however there is a maximum that can be saved there as well. That max is 180 days....anything over that gets taken away at each pay cycle.........so anything you earn over that 180 days has to be used ASAP.......
:rolleyes:
.or they take it away.......
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

.................are you confused yet............

Well, yes and no......:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:;)

if your out 5 days or more, you need to bring in a med cert to justify the time out.:rolleyes: If your out 4 days or less, nothing needed.
But like I said, there is a sick leave chart that counts days and occassions....:rolleyes:...........and you have to stay within the charts perameters for the "good" category...............as long as your within those guidelines your ok.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Are there guys that abuse the system..............yes.........but the state actually make them like that with their crappy use policy.

If you only use the actual day your sick, you get penalized for it..........

They need to simply give you a set amount per year, and thats it............but they won't do that.....:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

and just an FYI........I been there going on 26 years and rarely take any sick time off...........less than 4 weeks total in that 26 years

Why don't you just take 4 'sick' days a month till you retire?

Why don't you just take 4 'sick' days a month till you retire?

Because following the "sick leave chart" that would be 48 days on 12 occassion per year..........that would be off the chart

The most one can use without raising any red flags is 15 days on 3 occassions in a calendar year.........:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
So realisticly one week every 4 months would slip under the radar.......:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

But, I couldn't do that....................:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
