Shore bound tog.....

This fall i did pretty good for tog off of the surf on the south shore.Mostly in the bay. Is the fall or spring run better for surf fishing for tog? Its been said that softer baits are better for early season blacks.Does this hold true from the surf as well?
What and where would be a good starting point? Any pointers that you can pass along to help improve my catch?

Thanks........

Orient Point

I use to Fish the Orient Point
shore line in spring around May.
We would wade and cast whole sand worms to boulders and hook spring run tog up 10lbs.
Hooking a Tog in shallow water is some fight on meduim spinning tackle.
But remeber the big fish usally are egg ladden females so catch and release keep the smaller males.
