I know this is an apples versus oranges comparison but here goes, I was looking to upgrade a couple of rods and reels and was thinking, Shimano TLD 50 LRS with 80lb test or a combo of 80 and braid. My buddy is trying to convince me to go with the new Penn 30 wide 2 speed with 600' 80lb braid and a top shot of 150-200 60 lb mamoi. The reel is made for 20lb drag at strike and can easily go to mid 20s or higher. He also says long term durability and value over the graphites etc. Also although the TLD has a listing of 440 yards of 80 you would never fish higher than 20 drag so therefore you really aren't getting a "bigger" reel. I never had the "gold fever" before but they sure are purty. ... So my question is what do the experts think. The golds are about $75 more each

I agree with ya to fellas, Penn Internationals retain a better resale value if you ever decided to sell them for one reason or another.

I just picked up 2 50 VSW's at CHARKBAIT.COM - So far they have the best price compared to stores and the net for Penn internationals. Check them out!

Gold? Hmmm.

Ok,
I 'll be the first one to stick up for Shimano, besides one or two wives tail stories about their reel seats being ripped off(I never had a fish big enough to worry about that).I have to say I would still rather fish with a TLD 50 2-speed anytime.Their gearing feels much smoother and without a doubt their drag system blows Penn away with smoothness.Their clicker also sounds like a clicker, not like pebbles in a tin can.LOL
I know,I'm waiting for all the heat because of this post but I stand behind what I said.I'm a Shimano kind of guy,LOL

Jeez, well, we almost had the perfect post here, everyone in agreement, LOL, but NOOOOOOOOOOOO, Paulie had to chime in with that Shimano stuff, next will come EC with his Newells, tog with Evoralls, Overalls, whatever they are, electric tooth brushes, etc.

One thing I'm sure all will agree on, the season can't come soon enough.

2nd BEST sound in fishing!

Oh come on Paulie ~ you know that the GOLD reel screaming is the SECOND best sound in fishing!

I even have an alarm clock that sounds like an INTERNATIONAL!

SO what is the BEST SOUND?

.........hearing the engines start after a long day fishing in the deep blue sea!

I also shop at campbells but for my shimano gold. I just bought 2 penn 70vs reels and they just don't compare to the shimano's. The reel is not as smooth or reliable shifting and just don't feel as well made. My favorite offshore reel is the shimano 30w with 500yd's of 135lb spectra and 100yds of 80lb momoi. My original shimano 50w's are six years old and have seen a lot of action and were serviced last year by shimano and only required lube. When i used penn reels they always had a long list of work done and after 2-3 yrs the drags always needed service.

I fished 'em all

My vote too is for Penn International. The clickers may not be as pretty and loud sounding as the Shimanos, but in the long run the International will go the distance. I have Internationals, a Shimano 50lrs, and Everols. Everols are terrific lever drags for the price. Penns are in a league of their own.

But... I have been waiting six months for my Penn rebate for four of my Internationals, and as of yet no cigar. Anyone else having this problem?

Shimano

Well Boys,
I have fished both and have to say Shimanos take the cake. If you really use two gears the penns are not easy to use.... shimano is much better. When giant fishing, the need to switch from high to low in a hurry is essential, and shimano makes it mush easier. The switch on a penn is on the handle itself(which goes round and round meaning you have to stop reeling to switch) the shimanos it's at the end of the handle and you can quickly shift. I think the drags on my shimano's are much better as well. As far as re sale goes, I see far more penns on the market than shimanos..

I'm not too sure guys, I have a few internationals now. I was raised using them, and see that they are great reels. I have also fished with the TLD-50's. I can honestly say that I was impressed by them. I felt that the drags on the shimano were much smoother than the Penn's. So what does it come down to? All reels need to be maintained. I know on the western end of the Island (Brooklyn), it seems a little harder to get shimano parts. Penn parts on the other hand are very easy to get.

It's up to you. One thing that I do know is that I am going to buy a pair of TLD-50's when the new boat comes later this spring. What could it hurt??????
