300 catala

i bought it this past spring. great little reel! heck of a time trying to get used to a baitcaster when going for largemouth in PA (constantly casting) .. been using spinning reels my whole life! got a second spool for braided (spider line - good stuff) and started using it bottom fishing and it blows away anything i used to use. my rod is a 7' medium action outer banks (not fancy) and the feel and action is great ... braided rules! my setup is too lite for stripers but thats why we other rods and reels that the wife cant understand why we need so many! complain about.

BigBilly

Billy,
I've used it heavy for at least 2 seasons nailing stripers from 20-36" without a problem before I switched over to calcuttas. They are great reels for the money and personally I had no problem with the handle either.

Go for the right gold

The handle is a paddle handle i like the shimano power handle but Jerry may have ones that fit. Also like metioned here go for the calcutta not the clt-300 there better reels the calcuttas a 250 or a 400 should be the right reel for what your looking at. Had a 25 lbs bas on a calcutta 250 no stopping power but got the fish in after a 15 to 20min. battle Drag was excellent as far as smoothness. But you cannot sock them up like other reels. it cast great also.

BBB, the Catala, like the similar styled Cardiff, and Calcutta have been around for a number of years since the early 90s. The Catalas are your traditional designed baitcasters that are considered mid priced (around 100 dollars) reels in todays market. What differentiates the Catala from the similar looking Calcutta, is the machining process where the Catala is die cast, while the gold framed calcuttas are made from the more expensive cold forged manufacturing process. Other little differences are the amount of bearings, and speed of the retrieve. These reels are a step up from the more common Cosairs.

How would i compare them to Diawa Millionaires, Abus, and Penn international baitcasters? The Catalas are smooth casting, with a decent drag system for light line work. They are not as beefy nor have a gear train like the Penn internationals. They do not cast as well as your abus, and are not as refined a reel as the Millionaire X and Z series. But they are one baitcaster that will perform well for casting lures, using 6-12 lb test.

Billy don't do it

Billy Please don't try this you may not like the results. Like I said when tog fishing you need the drag socked up not light. the drags on the calata do not sock up! so use a Newell or a penn for togging. your climbing up the wrong tree here! You'll be luvky toland a 10 lber on that reel why try and lose him?
