my two cents

I fish the other end of LI,out of Jamaica Bay.If you can hit deep water that close ,I mean at least 100' plus, give it a shot if you have the proper gear. You need fishing gear, and safety equipment.Everyone has their own opinions as to what gear.I'm a poor working man and cannot afford a boatload of gold reels, but I have two, this is what I use,all stand-up rods, some better than others, reels include (all Penn)4/0 w/40#line,2-6/0's w/50# line,2 9/0's w/80#dacron,1 50W w/80#mono,1 50SW w/80#mono.I typically use the heavier outfits because I'm still learning, and lost a large thresher on the 50 test .I also have a flying gaff,a tuna gaff, and several small gaffs.I also carry a licensed 357 magnum, because I will not bring a live shark into the boat.I also believe in the tagging programs and have tags for shark and tuna. The boat is a 29' with twin Outboards.I carry a VHF,a portable VHF,loran, radar, and a color scope.
As I said, just my two cents worth.
tight lines.

i have been sharking for 12 years now and some of the best sharking and fun is within 10-12 miles off the beach....We are very lucky in the Shinn and Morich. area that during the fall run the Makos come in very close....Just over 110' of water...Let me know if you need any more info or questions...

I fish out of moriches and right now 10 miles se of the inlet there are alot of small mako pups so maybe there a chance a bigger one will come lurking through the slick. Also there are some giant tuna running towards shinne**** but you should really have the proper gear. It won't be a waste of time because you never know what will come into your slick. Good Luck!

fishologist II gives some good advice, just leave the firearms home. If you hang a shark by a tail rope, it will usually die in a little over an hour. We've had this discussion here before. And all of the best sharkers agreed that shooting a shark is a stupid, reckless and dangerous waste of time. It's also very unsportsman-like and against IGFA angling rules.

You are starting up that sore topic again. We did not ALL agree that it was STUPID to use fire arms, just YOU did.

So let it be written....

Jecaro,
Leave the firearms at home, don't you know its unsportsman like? You,me and a bunch of other people that use them must be wrong. All the pros said so,LOL.
Dr. Fish has a few options for us instead of the firearms.Look back at previous firearms discussions in this board. He also recommends hanging the fish for a while, after an hour it should be dead.I personally know of someone that was bitten in the thigh from a mako that was hanging for 8 hours, then at the dock while hanging it again and posing for pictures the DEAD shark turned and bit him good.I won't shoot one in a tournament,I know its not permitted, but I will take extra precaution.
I wish I was a pro, LOL
How long does it take to qualify as a Pro?

bad attitude well you said it all....we are the un sportman like ones......and since i have been fishing offshore for only 25+ years i guees i have a ways to go to be as knowledgeable as some of the "experts" who post on here.
as to your story of a person being bitten by a "DEAD" shark i know of it happening in brooklyne about 12 years ago,a friend of mine was there when it happened he was a dentist and he managed to stop the bleeding as they rushed the man to the hospital.and i have personally seen "DEAD" sharks come back from the dead as they were being weighed, after being hung for hours.
like most things using a firearm is a PERSONAL choice some chose to do it some don't both are right....and when some of the people on these message boards realize they do not have the answer to everything then maybe they will look at things with an open mind and NOT think they KNOW IT ALL.

but this is just my opinion and i am sure i am wrong in some peoples eyes and i accept that.

well bad attitude i am sure we are going to get slammed for our posts.

Tom,
I agree,I would not give a rookie a gun or bang stick to try out.Not on my boat.In fact on my boat I'm the only one that touches the bang stick, loaded or unloaded.I personally don't care for pistols or shotguns, but you don't see me critisizing somebody that happens to use them.In past posts about this, "rookies" were not mentioned.I don't need a "so-called-pro" telling me that is wrong,STUPID,dangerous, reckless,unnecessary,illegal,unsporstman- like, waste of time or anything else.I do what I feel comfortable doing.I feel safer using my bang stick then bringing a sleeping shark on board my boat.
It works for me ,even if I'm wrong.

Tom i agree with what bad attitude is saying....and may i point out one more thing......have you ever seen any "fishing reports" posted by these so called experts??it sort of makes me wonder why,if they ever really fish, why don't they post their results for the rest of us to "LEARN" from them??

again just my opinion ,i may be wrong......
