I've been fishing a lot but not catching much. Never had the epic bite inshore like I had in July last year. August is August. Unpredictable. I've been trolling from Split Rock/Stepping Stones all the way to Camp Hero and all I'm getting are porgies, sea bass and bluefish. Sunday night I was trolling the top of the incoming in front of the light and had to give away a small bluefish and my $15 lure to a hungry 80-100lb brown shark that had its sights set on my fish. This happened last year around this time. Like last year, I cut my line immediately so as not to start something I didn't want to finish.Unlike last year (much bigger shark) I stayed around and trolled for another hour or so to "get back on the horse." They're there every night. I can't go running home every time they start to act like sharks. I just have to be prepared to give away some lures. They seem to make their presence known more often around the thrashing ****tail bluefish than the big bass that stay low when they're fighting. Tipslfrom past experience: If you intend to take a struggling fish away from a hungry shark, you'd better do it fast. I'd highly recommend getting it out of the water as quickly as possible. And good luck. I also leave my underwater LED off when I know there are sharks around. They're attracted to the light. In sum, I'm not catching anything between midnight and 6am that I couldn't be catching in the middle of the afternoon except for the brown sharks.
